Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

12 oz bottle. Strong biscuit flavor and aroma. I used to dislike ambers for the most part because of the cloying maltiness, but they’re starting to grow on me. Still nothing quite as satisfying as a nice hoppy beer, but this is do-able. Nothing Belgian about this beer from a brewery called New Belgium. What’s up with that?

Not very impressed with this Amber. Slightly bitter and had a alcohol aftertaste. Looked great in the glass but ’bout it.

Poured to a warmed, initally refrigerated pint glass at the Village Tavern & Grill in Carol Stream, IL., an amber hue with a modest, off white head and light lacing. The aroma was some toastiness, a bit of caramel and the slightest hint of cocoa. The flavor was malt driven with some graininess, and low hop bitterness that didn’t make it to the finish. Medium bodied and an acceptable food compliment.

I always love amber ale/bocks. This was a disappointment. Pours to a medium head with a full body. Has a crisp taste, but was somewhat bitter and did not go down smoothly.

Bottle. Nice deep amber color with a thick white head. Aroma is a blend of yeast and fruit that is more complex than what I remember from the draught at the pub. The flavor is the letdown - just a slightly hoppier version of standard brews but I have to admit it is very smooth and drinkable.

This malty amber has become the craftbeer of the moment in NWI, but I cannot understand the adulation. It is not bad by any means, just not special. Perhaps it’s lack of hops fills a niche not already occupied by Three Floyds in the local ale market. With their prices being comparable, why would I pick Fat Tire over Alpha King or Pride & Joy?

Yeast in the aroma. Flavor is very grainy malt, nothing special but better than other beers you can get often on tap in non-craft bars in the midwest

Strong malt flavor and aroma. Not much fruit in the nose or in the flavor. Nice head on amber colored pour.
