Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

Fat Tire was really my first experience with the micro brew phenemenon; I had my first one eleven years ago. At the time, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, but over the years my palate has developed. This beer is not sold in Florida so it is hard to get a hold of. Recently, in San Diego, I had the opportunity to have one; it had been a while. Not as I remembered, and definitely doesn’t compare to the fine Belgian Beers out there; hence, the misleading nature of the name of the company. As an Amber ale, it is good, but not great. Color is typical of the style, taste and finish also consistent. Very drinkable, and smooth. Carbonation is perfect, but the nose is a little off. Can’t really describe it.

I really prefer this on draft as opposed to out of a bottle. Big time toast/biscuit malt flavors predominate in this beer.

Golden yellow color, white head. Bready, yeasty aroma. Flavor is malts, yeast, biscuit, slight spiciness, some light hoppy bitterness on the finish. Easy to drink, nothing remarkable, but not a bad beer by any means.

Pours a clear, light amber with a thick off-white head. It has a fresh aroma of sweet berries and malt. The taste is a ditto, with a thin (perhaps too thin) mouthfeel. Not a bad beer, but the malt is a little weak.

Bottle. Pours golden with a creamy white head. Aroma and flavour of toast, caramel and spicy yeast notes. Well balanced. It’s light in appearance and body and nothing really stands out that I’d go back for another one.

This isn’t as bad as people make it out to be, a decent mass produced beer from a pretty large Colorado brewery. The aroma is rather stale, it’s very easily drinkable with a thin amber finish. This is a good cheap beer available in bombers that I can drink and use to bottle homebrew.

This is a rather harsh beer to drink. The beer is thick and syrupy. It taste like mass-produced white bread that is starting to turn bad. I won’t buy this again.

12oz bottle
Appearance: Pours a medium golden with a nice white head that disappears quickly leaving a nice amount of lace in the glass.
Aroma: Bready, yeasty aroma that is almost a sour smell
Taste: Grainy malt with very little hop bitterness. Mouth feel is watery
This is one beer that is sometimes good and other times I don’t know why I bought it. It is not a process issue, I think it has to do with the temp you drink it.
