Commercial Description:
Named in honor of our founder Jeff’s bike trip through Belgium, Fat Tire Amber Ale marks a turning point in the young electrical engineer’s home brewing. Belgian beers use a far broader palette of ingredients (fruits, spices, esoteric yeast strains) than German or English styles. Jeff found the Belgian approach freeing. Upon his return, Jeff created Fat Tire and Abbey Belgian Ale, (assuming Abbey would be his big gun). He and his wife, Kim traveled around sampling their homebrews to the public. Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it. Except the name. Fat Tire won fans is in its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness.

I generally hate any beer with the word "Belgium" on the label. But this was a "South Carolina commemorative," so I gave it a try in honor of my home state. Not bad at all. Will drink it again.

On tap at Wellman’s. Possibly a dirty tap line or old keg b/c this wasn’t very good. Dirty musty malt and not in a good way. Not much of anything for hops. Yea, no good.

Tap, bottle. I finally got around to rating this pig. Amber pour, white head. Caramel and yeast on the nose and taste. Overrated.

simple but quite tasty and balanced. a nice easy-drinking session amber.
was great with the nachos with raw garlic guacamole i ordered to go with it.

[A] Biscuit, hint of hoppiness, amber malt smell, pleasasnt fruitiness, caramel sweetness. [A] Golden amber. Pretty looking foamy off-white head. Into mug. I broke my New Belgium Blume long ago : ( [F] Probably one of the most biscuity beers I’ve ever had. Pleasant pale malts and light fruity hops, for a crispness more than a bitter. Bread. Caramel. Lightning bug. Something here reminds me of chocolate malt. [P] Ice cold from the freezer. Fairly thin. Smooth. Definitely easy drinking. Again. Crisp hops over bitter. But enough for a clean finish. [O] My personal standard for ambers, let alone, beer. If it doesn’t meet or exceed this, its not worth it. Which is no difficult feat. Affordable, yet still a premium cost. I don’t think this deserves the 90’s overall. But REALLY? As of now its 53 and 68.4 by style. Mind you, the 4’s and 5’s from inactive, lowest raters are probably tht only thing boosting it THAT high. New Belgium makes some great beers. And this one, though not over the top, is no exception. Very popular here in Chicago. I won’t rant, but its a great intro, and I think deserves fair ratings and more credit. Slap a Mikkeller/Bruery label on it, and I’m sure it would soar in ratings. Snoochie boochies. Beeches.

Bottle Caramel malt with a hint of grass hops aroma. Light amber color with moderate head. Buttery caramel malt flavor with light hops finish. Still a nice introduction to craft brewing for the novice.

I really prefer this on draft as opposed to out of a bottle. Big time toast/biscuit malt flavors predominate in this beer.
