Commercial Description:
Frambozen begins with the aroma of fresh red raspberries, followed by the ripe seductiveness of a fruity brown ale with depth and delicate malt notes. It is deep ruby in color, with flavors just as rich. Every year, New Belgium sends a delegate to the Pacific Northwest to oversee the process of turning freshly picked berries into a pure juice to be added in fermentation. The coming of Thanksgiving at New Belgium is ushered in with the first sighting of our cellar operators scuttling about, covered head to tow in a festive crimson berry wash.

Bottle. Purplish brown color, khaki head with a tinge of pink. Aroma of huge raspberry, bread, chocolate. Taste is of raspberry chambord (first liquor I ever had), oranges, roasty malts, yeast. Finish is pretty wet with a sour note. The raspberry taste is affrontive at first, but once you get used to it, the beer drinks like any other. Very nice.

When they go easy on the berries this stuff could be legendary..the first time i had it it knocked me out,a hint of berry balanced with a dark smooth choclatey brown ale flavor, reminded me of my first cherry wheat back in the day (just a hint of fruit)before sam adams became a four letter word-a reminder of their glory days.last few times i’ve tried this there was too much berry taste, though (why does every company do that?)

Pours a deep burgundy with a dense, creamy, pinkish beige head that diminishes leaving patchy lace. The nose is a raspberry front with a roasted chocolaty malt backing. At first, there was a funky wet dog note, but that faded within a few minutes. Medium-bodied and fairly flat with a sour, tart and dry/slightly vinous finish. The flavor is a tart raspberry front with lesser notes of cocoa and red grape skins. A refreshingly different brew and one that would pair quite well with chocolate cake.

Had this beer on 12/3/2006. Aroma is a mild roasted malt scent with faint tone of berry on the back. Color is a rich amber with very good carbonation and nice tight head. Taste is earthy, roasted and sweet. Starting with a medium body it goes down crisp. Finish comes on sweet with a faint berry taste that turns to a mild roasted flavor then ends with a tart almost dry feel. I think it one of the best fall brews.

From a 12oz Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy color of cherrywood with a thick layer of fizzy gray head and shades of peach skin. Loads of raspberries in the nose, along with some darker over-ripe strawerry notes and a hint of cranberry crispness. Light chocolate and caramel nougat malts with a hint of vanilla, but mainly fruit. Light bodied, thinly carbonated mouthfeel. The beer is substantially lighter and more thinly carbonated than either the aroma or appearance suggests. Thin and abrasive at first rather than the expected soft creaminess. Light, dry baker’s chocolate and roasted pumpernickel bread crusts start initially scrub the tongue, but this mellows out into a nice softer finish of raspberries, cocoa, and toasted biscuit. Fruity, slightly tannic fruit skin final smack, but not acidic. Thanks, Tom!

12 Oz Bottle. Sweet torte-like raspberry, shaved chocolate and caramel sauce aroma. Bright and gum-tingling. Nice orange-brown, ruby-tinted light haze pour, with a rim of rosy tinge head. Flavor starts in a much drier raspberry seed and dried rosehip stem and rose petal floral quality. Sugars are rather dried out with pithiness and some faint acerbic cranberry juice. Sour brown qualities limited, but assist with nice mellow, crisp raspberry character. Finishes on more raspberry seed and some apricot. Carbonation mellow, but bubbly in the mouth. Smacks on a caramel, toffee and light chocolate note. Obviously filtered. Could have more.

Bottled. Thanks Fredrik. Red-brown colour. Cocoa, milk chocolate and coca-cola notes in aroma. Raspberry backbone in flavour. This is very much a brown ale spiced with raspberries. Medium bodied. Bottle was 1/2 year old.
