Commercial Description:
The newest offering in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Program, Dandelion Ale, was inspired by the great hop shortage of 2008. Dandelion greens have a natural bittering effect much like hops. Reveling in the freedom of the Belgian brewing tradition, we thought this ubiquitous weed would make an interesting addition to a traditionally hopped beer. The result is a strong blond ale brewed with toasted pilsener malt, flavored with fresh picked dandelion greens and grains of paradise. Dandelion Ale is hazy and light gold in color with peachy aroma and a Belgian yeast strain. It has a unique bitterness, subtle maltiness and a creamy mouthfeel.

On tap at Sun Devil Basement. Pours a nice orange with a white head. Aroma is citrus, malt, grass, and a strange sweetness. Flavor is citrus, grass, malt, that same strange sweetness and light floral notes. Interesting brew.

Tap @ Boise Brewer’s Fest: Pours a golden yellow color with a light white head. The nose has some light esters and bright citrus notes. Lots of orange and peppery yeast along with a sweeter toasty maltiness in the mouthfeel. A bit light in body and carbonation for the style and to offput the candy sugar. Sniffable though.

Draft @ Toronado. Pours a bright, hazy golden-orange color; fluffy white head with decent retention and fine-bubbled lacing. Especially sweet aroma of hard candy, oranges, and floral notes; pleasant but definitely sweet. Medium mouthfeel: the dandelion presence shows more clearly in the mouth, as does a ton of sweetness: candy, lots of oranges and fruitiness; just an inexcusably sweet, sweet beer. Messy, with dandelions. Lengthy finish: sweet oranges, candy and a toastiness emerging, a touch.

draft at papago... hazy orange with a soft white head. smells of pale belgian sugar/caramel, grass, yeast, soft spice and perfume. the palate is on the sweet side while the flavor pretty much mirrors the aroma. there is a defined note of piloncilla and a touch of peppery spice to finish off the description. medium bodied with a sticky mouth feel... rather unrefreshing. 6/3/6/3/13/3.1

Sampled at the Thirsty Monk, draft. Hazy orange brew with a wispy head. Bready, musty aroma with light grain. Lightly sweet with wheat flavors and some kind of candy like presence. Actually, the sweetness eventually becomes too much for me. Medium body. Seems like a porch sipper for a summer evening. Nothing too great.

Gold, no head. Sweet, flowery aroma. Some caramel in the aroma, as well, and some perfumy notes, as well. Really just a little too much on the sweet side...

Pour is a dark golden with a large white head. Aroma is a very slight clove and banana. Flavor has a decent fruit and sweetness which i’m told is from the dandelion stems. The after taste does have some wit beer aspects with the grain and fruit but this is pretty much a one trick pony using dandelion stems instead of hop flowers.

draft at Toronado’s. Sweet banana aromas with hints of spice. Pours a cloudy blonde with little head. The flavor was a very basic belgian blonde with little character, light fruits, citrus, with some banana. There’s really not a lot going on here?
