Commercial Description:
The newest offering in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Program, Dandelion Ale, was inspired by the great hop shortage of 2008. Dandelion greens have a natural bittering effect much like hops. Reveling in the freedom of the Belgian brewing tradition, we thought this ubiquitous weed would make an interesting addition to a traditionally hopped beer. The result is a strong blond ale brewed with toasted pilsener malt, flavored with fresh picked dandelion greens and grains of paradise. Dandelion Ale is hazy and light gold in color with peachy aroma and a Belgian yeast strain. It has a unique bitterness, subtle maltiness and a creamy mouthfeel.

Gold, no head. Sweet, flowery aroma. Some caramel in the aroma, as well, and some perfumy notes, as well. Really just a little too much on the sweet side...

Pour is a dark golden with a large white head. Aroma is a very slight clove and banana. Flavor has a decent fruit and sweetness which i’m told is from the dandelion stems. The after taste does have some wit beer aspects with the grain and fruit but this is pretty much a one trick pony using dandelion stems instead of hop flowers.

draft at Toronado’s. Sweet banana aromas with hints of spice. Pours a cloudy blonde with little head. The flavor was a very basic belgian blonde with little character, light fruits, citrus, with some banana. There’s really not a lot going on here?

On tap at Toronado. This dark golden ale poured with a thin off-white head and a floral aroma. There is a sweet caramel malt flavor with some slight bitterness, probably from the dandelion. There is a honey-like aftertaste.

( Draught ) Pours a cloudy golden body with a medium egg-white head. Aroma of dandelions, toasted grain, and dew on the grass in the morning. Flavor of dandelions, earth, clove, grains of paradise, and banana.

Tap at KC Flying Saucer. Dark cloudy gold with a thin white head. Sweet nose with dandelions and cookies. The taste is sweet donuts with some finish of orange rind. Nicely done, I found this one to be well balanced between the sweetness and earthy backbone that I get in most NB ales. This is something I would like to try again.

Draft at Sheffield’s Chicago. Pours an orangey yellow, small head. Nose is very floral and bitter, like when you break the stem of a weed. Light citrus in the nose as well as a strong grain presence. Taste is very interesting, very interesting true bitterness along with fruity herbal notes and light spice, white pepper. Finishes a little sweet. Interesting
