Commercial Description:
The newest offering in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Program, Dandelion Ale, was inspired by the great hop shortage of 2008. Dandelion greens have a natural bittering effect much like hops. Reveling in the freedom of the Belgian brewing tradition, we thought this ubiquitous weed would make an interesting addition to a traditionally hopped beer. The result is a strong blond ale brewed with toasted pilsener malt, flavored with fresh picked dandelion greens and grains of paradise. Dandelion Ale is hazy and light gold in color with peachy aroma and a Belgian yeast strain. It has a unique bitterness, subtle maltiness and a creamy mouthfeel.

On tap @ Maproom. Crystal clear yellow color with a white head. Aromas are weakly buttery with a little bit of an herbal edge to them. The taste is spicy yeast, malt and a fruity finish. Medium creamy mouthfeel. This is a little pepper on the finish and it drank pretty nicely...

On tap at the brewery at 7/18/09. Pours orange, decent head. Very floral aroma, which must be the dandelion, with hints of vanilla and spice. Nice malty sweetness up front, then a unique slow bitterness that lingers on the tongue. Also very lively on the tongue.

On tap at the Map Room. Orange pour with thick white head. Aroma is sweet belgian malt and spice, honey, some bread. Flavor of honey bread with a bitter, vegetable note. It’s not as bad as that sounds and actually kind of decent. Grassy, dry, quenching. Yeah, i didnt mind it.

A lightly hazed blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, light sweet caramel. In mouth, a very fruity and oily ale with butterscotch, coriander, very herbal, interesting but not my thing. Medium bodied. On tap at Russian River Beer and BBQ Revival, August 15 2009.

On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours a cloudy, orange-golden body with a finger-width, off-white, creamy head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is wet dough and flowery. A light perfumey clove, slightly buttery, Belgian yeast fruits and banana, and a bit of honey citrus. Flavor is much maltier than the aroma led me to believe. A lot breadier with a deeper honey butter taste. Still a good amount of flowery spices, mostly clove, but not as delicate as the aroma. Some Belgian yeast banana-fruitiness taste and a hint of lemon zest. A bit toasty with just a hint of dry, herbal hop bitterness. Medium duration with a bready, flowery aftertaste. Medium bodied and creamy with just a light crispness accompanying the dry finish. Overall, not a bad beer at all. Flowery, malty, well balanced, and tasty.

Nose is sweet and somewhat bready with hints of orange and something weird I could not place my finger on... Probably the dandelion. Pours orange yellow, hazy with a decent head. The flavor is fruity and sweet initially. Orange dominates with some bread, and weird floral/vegetal note. It has some nice fruity undertones but there is something there that I just can’t place my finger on that I found almost gross. As it warmed it got better. It is what it is. Probably would not have again.

Sampled this from a growler at New Belgium’s DIA location. Pours a soft golden color with a dusty white head. Smells and tastes of grass, flowers, yeast, and underripe peaches. A bit too gentle for my taste, but certainly interesting.

On tap at Hop Leaf. Pours hazy orange with a foamy white head. The aroma is of grassy hops, peaches, yeast, bready malt, and fruit. Taste starts off with very earthy, grassy hops. Almost like a bag of grass clippings is thrown in the mix. There is a fair amount of peaches to it as well. Has a backbone of breay malt that anchors the beer. There is also a fair amount of sweet fruit in the brew. Lingering grassy hop and spice taste. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy.
