Commercial Description:
The newest offering in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Program, Dandelion Ale, was inspired by the great hop shortage of 2008. Dandelion greens have a natural bittering effect much like hops. Reveling in the freedom of the Belgian brewing tradition, we thought this ubiquitous weed would make an interesting addition to a traditionally hopped beer. The result is a strong blond ale brewed with toasted pilsener malt, flavored with fresh picked dandelion greens and grains of paradise. Dandelion Ale is hazy and light gold in color with peachy aroma and a Belgian yeast strain. It has a unique bitterness, subtle maltiness and a creamy mouthfeel.

On tap at Ciceros. Body is a light gold with a thin but dense head. Aromas are weakly buttery with a little bit of an herbal edge to them. Flavor follow this path... Butterscotch andpear seem to be the mainstays her and it needs a little more bitterness or something for my taste.

On tap at O’Briens. Another strange one; interesting use of ingredients. Color was a hazy yellow. Aroma was mostly of sweet malt. Flavor was bready, fruity, floral and fruity. Solid palate. A bit herbal and earthy, which was not surprising. Ok for me.

Tap at Toronado’s SD. Pours a hazy yellow orange. Very creamy beer with earthy flavors. Flavors of what i would picture a dandelion to taste like. Interesting and worth the try.

On tap at Pizza Port. Yellow with a fizzy white head. Sweet malty aroma. Sweet crisp citrus and malty taste with a nicely carbonated mouth feel.

On tap. Pours with a hazy golden orange body and a resilient head. Aroma of honey, caramel, vanilla, hefe yeast, light clove phenols, some suntan lotion and a bit of an herbal note. Taste is herbal and lightly phenolic with banana esters, vanilla, grains of paradise and wheat notes. Lively bubbles and a dryish mouthfeel. Interesting.

Hazy gold with fair, creamy white head / Banana and spice nose / Medium body, malty, syrupy, and cloying, with good finish / Flavors of banana, orange, coconut, and grassy dandelion / While the dandelion adds interest, the rest of the brew is a simple, clumsy Belgian.

Draft at a local. Pours a minimal short lived head, no lacing, over a cloudy pale yellow (SRM 5-10) body.....nose is floral, bit of honey, mild fruit possibly peach....taste is mild malt, mild hop bit of lemon, finishing light bitterness and spice.....mouth feel is relatively light, carbonation medium. Almost a Triple, but a bit on the sweet end, not quite a Saison, an interesting beer.
