Commercial Description:
The newest offering in New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Program, Dandelion Ale, was inspired by the great hop shortage of 2008. Dandelion greens have a natural bittering effect much like hops. Reveling in the freedom of the Belgian brewing tradition, we thought this ubiquitous weed would make an interesting addition to a traditionally hopped beer. The result is a strong blond ale brewed with toasted pilsener malt, flavored with fresh picked dandelion greens and grains of paradise. Dandelion Ale is hazy and light gold in color with peachy aroma and a Belgian yeast strain. It has a unique bitterness, subtle maltiness and a creamy mouthfeel.

( Draught ) Pours a cloudy golden body with a medium egg-white head. Aroma of dandelions, toasted grain, and dew on the grass in the morning. Flavor of dandelions, earth, clove, grains of paradise, and banana.

Draft @ Choice City. Clear dense gold colored body with a white head. Strange nose of floral bread crust and wet cracker/pils malt, the Belgian yeast imparts a lightly spicy/floral/perfume/butter scent. Texture is heavy and oily, up front tastes of dishsoap and floral yeast esters. Dandelion is not distinct or really noticeable at all - not sure what it’s supposed to taste like anyway - and by the end of the glass I’m left wondering just what the point of this beer was. There’s little character as all, nothing stands out, I felt empty.

Tap @ Boise Brewer’s Fest: Pours a golden yellow color with a light white head. The nose has some light esters and bright citrus notes. Lots of orange and peppery yeast along with a sweeter toasty maltiness in the mouthfeel. A bit light in body and carbonation for the style and to offput the candy sugar. Sniffable though.

A lightly hazed blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, light sweet caramel. In mouth, a very fruity and oily ale with butterscotch, coriander, very herbal, interesting but not my thing. Medium bodied. On tap at Russian River Beer and BBQ Revival, August 15 2009.

Tap at KC Flying Saucer. Dark cloudy gold with a thin white head. Sweet nose with dandelions and cookies. The taste is sweet donuts with some finish of orange rind. Nicely done, I found this one to be well balanced between the sweetness and earthy backbone that I get in most NB ales. This is something I would like to try again.

On tap at New Belgium poured a hazy gold with a lasting white head. Aromas of bread dough, toasted malt, light fruittiness and a hint of rice. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of fruittiness, bread, light spice and light rice with a smooth lingering bitter finish.

Cloudy orange gold color. Thick white head. Honeysuckle and orange blossom flavor. Intense candy sweetness reminiscent of a tripel.

On tap. Pours with a hazy golden orange body and a resilient head. Aroma of honey, caramel, vanilla, hefe yeast, light clove phenols, some suntan lotion and a bit of an herbal note. Taste is herbal and lightly phenolic with banana esters, vanilla, grains of paradise and wheat notes. Lively bubbles and a dryish mouthfeel. Interesting.
