Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle. Pours a clear red with a small beige head. Lots of bubbles. Tart cherries and oak dominate the aroma. Flavor starts out malty then ends with a hint of oak and tart cherries. Very nice. I (and suprisingly) my wife really liked this one.

Pours a mostly clear, mahogany color with a fairly small, fizzy, pillowy, off-white head which is mostly diminishing and leaves minimal lace. Nose is a bit faint and simple but pleasant; notes of canned cherries, light caramel, faint yeast funk, and faint vanilla. Flavor is better with more depth; cherries are tart, more vinous, and jammy, sweet malts are more apparent and richer with caramel, vanilla, and a bit toasty, the oak is earthy and apparent slightly, the yeast funk is still underlying, the tannins and acidity are moderate. The palate is lively to fizzy, prickly, silky, and more than medium. Finishes fairly long with more oak notes and vanilla coming into play with the yeast funk still in the background and the cherries slowly diminishing into nothing. This was a curious beer; the nose and appearance were nothing but every aspect after that was solid. The tartness is great, the vinous tannins are intriguing, and the palate has a great feel. Overall, it was enjoyable and worth the try; not nearly as warm as others have, but it has been set aside for some months now. Solid NB brew.

Bottle. Aroma is mild cherry sweetness, breadiness, thick malty, light roasted notes. Flavor is mildly dry with wood, earth, light cherry tartness, very light toasted grain. Lightly bittersweet and tart on the finish. A beautiful, quite complex beer!

Pours clear scarlet-brown with a thick cream-colored head, some lacing. Smells of cherries, bread, plum and hay. Medium, velvety and sharp body. Tastes of ripe cherries, apple cider, and citrus. Very sour mid-palate, with just a little hop bitterness in the finish. Delicious and very similar to kriek lambics.

Bottle from BevMo in Vacaville, CA. Poured and amber color with a fruity aroma. Tasted of cherries but just didn’t sit well on the palate. Seemed almost like artificial flavoring. Not worth the $9.99 price tag.

Bottle shared by Hophead22. Sour aroma like tart berries. A dark clean reddish brown color. Has a slight sour cherry flavor.
