Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle courtesy of Dr. McDonald of the NW Passage. Color is a nice dark garnet/ruby with a purpley head that fast retreats. Aroma is clean wood, cherry, vinegar malt. Flavor is off-putting slightly - while not totally reminiscent of Old Cherry Ale, the resemblance in fruit is plain. The finish moves away from generic American ’sour’ and toward a more Continental funky presence, but the yeast wasn’t varied enough, I guess, to really entrench such a sensation. Pretty unified, but missing a layer or two of complexity.

bottle thanks to KAggie. Shared at March Houston Tasting. Pours a clear, dark brown with an off-white head. Nose is of cherries. Taste is strong, tart cherry concentrate. Mouthfeel is tart and dry.

Very interesting... definitiely has a lot of cherry flavor but also has a solid dark beer base. Certainly not a true Kriek, much more of a beer. Worth a try.

Pours a transparent dark mahogany with ruby hues and a thin, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of sweet sugary candied cherries and some dark caramel malt. Starts with good fullness and finely dissolved carbonation along with a good caramel maltiness and dark cherry flavor before a sweet and tart finish. A pretty good fruit beer.

Deep red, beige head. Cherry, sour, roasty, syrupy, dry ending, tannic, woody. Full bodied. Well balanced but I’ve had better Krieks.

Pours into a flute with a reddish orange color and a sour cherry aroma. The flavor is cherry and oak with a dry finish. The base beer does not taste anything like a lambic, so this is more of a fruit beer than a kriek.
