Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with a small dark tan head. Musty, tart aroma with malt and light cherries. Cherry and wood flavor with light acetic tones, tartness, and dark malt. Medium bodied. Cherries linger with mustiness, tartness, and light malt. First half of the bottle is better than the second.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a light brown head over a dark, amber brown body. Aroma is muted with oak, alcohol, dark cherry, pilsner malt and leather. Taste is slightly sour, a bit metallic, cherry juice, wood, ice tea, and a bit of soggy malts (kind of wet dog). Lively bubbles, watery mouthfeel and some alcohol on the palate.

Pours dark amber with a white head. Aroma is of cherries, wood, malt, oak, and assorted fruit. Taste is of very tart cherries, oak, malt, and spice. Has a very wooden underlying taste underneath all the tartness. The taste is weak, and the beer is too light. Pretty damn dull.

22oz bottle. Poured a medium reddish/brownish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of woodiness, some funk, cherries, and some berries. Tastes of cherries (semi-sweet start with a nice lighter tart), woodiness, citrus, and the same lighter funkiness. Alcohol content well hidden. Not that bad of a Fruit Beer.

Bottle. Body-dark iced tea with a few loose bubbles around the rim. Nose-some sour, light plastic, some macro, peach. Taste-medium acid, dirty, no funk, stinging CO2, slight pool water, light tannins on the back end. Not a lot of cherry. It’s tasty. I would call this a “Kriek Light”.
