Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle. Body-dark iced tea with a few loose bubbles around the rim. Nose-some sour, light plastic, some macro, peach. Taste-medium acid, dirty, no funk, stinging CO2, slight pool water, light tannins on the back end. Not a lot of cherry. It’s tasty. I would call this a “Kriek Light”.

Bomber. Pours rubied brown with a rough and lightly pink head. Nice funky cherry nose with a dash of yeast and wood. Light body and active carbonation. Cherries, oak, lemon and some soggy figs on toast all show up in the taste. Nothing big and in your face, just an enjoyable blend of the kriek flavors I look for. Dry and softly sour finish. My wife liked this one a lot.

Beautiful dark cherry reddish brown. No head. Mellow, slightly funky mix of berries and dust. Definitely a little funky with smooth oak. It’s not way over the top like some sour fruit beers, and it’s definitely one of the more approachable beers of the style. Really enjoyable.

Bottle. Tangy nose of browned cherries and stale strawberries coupled with a dull bran-scented toast and malt character. Surprisingly dull texture and dull character throughout the entire bottle, regardless of aeration or warmth. Dull bran muffins, stale, aged strawberries, stale bread, and a finish that lacks depth or complexity. Disappointing.

22oz Bomber – Gravity Beer Market – Olympia, WA
Aroma: Great sour ale flavors with a rich fruit aroma.
Appearance: Brown with a red tint in color, clear with a light head.
Flavor: Huge flavors this beer had a deep rich sour cheery beer. This was wonderful.
Palate: Dry finish with a great overall Mouthfeel.
Overall: One of the better fruit beers out there. A wonderful beer to make my 1900th beer on Rate Beer.

Sampled on 2/4/2009. This fruit beer pours a deep red color from a 22oz bottle. Small sized beige/pinkish foamy head. Aroma is cherry, oak, must and sweet. A medium bodied fruit beer. The malts are fruity and semi sweet cherries. A hint of oak. A little bit sour/tart with a very slight funk. Very smooth tasting. Nice balance. The tartness and funkiness intensifies as it warms. Nice sipping beer that opens up as it warms. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly tart.

Nose of cherries, caramel, sour fruit, berries, oak and toast. Deep amber with garnett highlights, light haze, off white but quickly disappating head. Light to thin body. Flavors of sour cherries, caramel, oak, toffee, light grain and sweet-tart. Lightly puckering finish. Could use some more complexity, but a nice beginning
