Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Pours a dark brown-red with a hint of white head. Aromas of sour red cherries, vanilla, and green apple. Flavours of semi-sweet cherries, a healthy dose of buttery oak, and chocolate caramel. There is a delightful balance of sweet and sour flavours here that complement each other admirably. If I had not been told that this was a blend I would have never guessed - interesting and very enjoyable.

This is pretty bad. Light acidic aroma. Flavor of stomach acid, oak, and cherry. I don’t mind acid, but there is something off about this. The oak is ok, but the cherry is off as well, very medicinal. I wonder if something went wrong with the bottle. will rerate when i get the chance.

Bottle. Poured a cherry juice-red color with a pinkish head. Smelled of cereal grains and cherry. Light to medium bodied with a hint of acidity at the end. I tasted distinct cherry, some oak, a hint of red wine, and dark malts. So so, but unfortunately reminded me a bit of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat in that the cherry was a bit too medicine-like.

Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF tasting 09. Amber, lasting beige head. Touch of sour fruit on aorma, sweetish fruit, bit like a Flemish sour. Bit too sweet on the brown sugar.

Skyview Tasting 2.5. Thanks to BDR for carting this back for me. Dark brown color with no head. Dark sugary aroma with a bit of tartness. A solid tartness in the flavor, but fairly light on the cherry. A bit of sugar. Malt stays hidden.

Pours a deep reddish brown with a light off whilte head. Aroma of plum and cherry. A slightly sour touch along with the bitter cherry flavor. Hints of a brown ale in the backround, almost separate in flavor as opposed to blending. Finish kind of dissapates to just a light sweetness.

Clear brick red pour with small tan head. Nose of sour cherry. Flavor is much the same with hints of toasted nut. Medium body with good carbination, alcohol is not even noticed. It sneaks up fast on this one.
