Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Thanks to hopdog for snagging this bottle for me. Pours a deep ruby with a medium creamy deep off white head that left sticky lacing. Aroma of deep tart cherries, light oak and vanilla, some belgian yeast esters. Flavor of nice tart lightly sour cherries, light oaky notes. Some folks mentioned this was sticky and sweet. I thought it was rather dry and flavorful. ABV well hidden.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a crystal clear dark reddish brown that is more red when held against a light. There is a moderate tan head that is gone after the first quarter of the glass and left a few small patches of lace. Pleasant aroma of cherries, malt, and oak. The flavor is malt and some mildly tart cherries with just a hint of oak. As the beer warms a bit, the tartness of the cherries seems to subside, and the sweetness takes over more. An ok beer, but I was a bit let down as I was expecting more.

22 oz bottle, via 5000. Pours a clear reddish brown with a small fizzy beige head that vanished completely. Dark carmel nose with a some cherry syrup and just a touch of oak. The flavor is very sweet with lots of caramel and a bit of a chocolate covered cherry tartness. Kinda finishes a bit like cherry cough syrup. Did they just brew a beer and add a crapload of Juicy Juice? Sticky and sugary sweet on the palate, it lingers on like some kind of cherry candy. Not a pleasant beer.

Pours a dark cranberry red color with a small tan head that slowly recedes leaving some sudsy lacing behind. The nose shows some tart cherries, oak, sweet dark fruit, and candied malts. The flavor follows with the tart cherries, but then followed up by sweet candied cherries and fruit. The flavor leans more to the syrupy and medicinal side of things. A slight acetic taste is left on the backend. Medium full bodied with ample carbonation and a sweet, yet dry finish. This was interesting, but a bit too sweet and not what I am looking for.

Bottle: Ruby with a brown hue and a tan film of head. Airy aroma- some Belgian dark malt character at the base- Dubbel-ish notes covered by a cherry juice presence that isn’t very natural. Spngey palate- some vague Belgian dark malts in the background of the flavor- not much body/texture- some cocoa & raisiny notes are evident underneath a cherry juice character. Nothing really natural or cohesive going on- papery as well, and it’s spongy texture isn’t very appealing. I tried liking this, but it’s not that good.

Bottle shared at Andy’s tasting. Pours a clear ruby with a light beige head. Lots of cherry on the nose, almost overwhelming, sweet tartness. Piles of foamy carbonation. Light tart finish. Rather tasty.

Bomber (2009) in a wine glass. Clear, deep Burgundy w/ an evanescent spidery tan head; musty aroma of cherries, strong wood notes (oak?); taste is tart, fruity and woody- quite tasty and sour; moderate dryness. An intriguing brew.
