Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle from Larry Pitonka. Not much cherry in the aroma, light cherry, muggy and sweaty, dry and grainy. There is some cherry in the flavor, no doubt, but a very sweaty, sauna note. Binding, sugary, very malty and muggy aroma, kind of gross. Overly sweet and not quite sour at all, not very complex, I’m not too crazy about this at all. Its original ratings at 50th percentile were quite a bit more accurate.

Poured a ruby hinted mahogany. Cola like fizzy head rises and falls in seconds. very poor halo remains. Smells lightly of cherry, dark woods and funk. Taste is good, not overly cherry which I feared it would be. The tart cherry is the star, but it is balanced with some strong heavily toasted oak and dark belgian candi sugar. Good mouthfeel, not too dry, carbonation is rather light, body is good and stands up to the lacto and pedio. Not an acid bomb like i expected. For a Kriek its pretty damn good.

Bomber. Garnet to ruby color in a clear body, topped with a minimal, off-white head that turns to a ring and leaves no trace. Big cherry aroma with musk, spiciness, and sour oak--like a cabernet. Medium-full body with plenty of coarse bubbles and a nice finish. Sour cherries, oak, spiciness (clove? white pepper?), lemon juice, sour sweat, noble hops, touch of wheat. Sour finish. Interesting beer. Fairly complex, but might benefit from 6-12months aging to help the flavors settle together a bit. Took a long time to drink the bomber.

Dark red with a thin off-white head. Strong sour cherry aroma. Sour flavor with a sour finish. Dark malt comes out when the sours chills out on the finish. Interesting, but you may want to share this one (750 ml is a lot).

Bomber shared by Enniskillen. Nose is light cherry tartness, caramel, and a bit of woodiness. Clear dark cherry red with a small beige head. Flavor is lightly tart, with cherries, and a bit of pepperiness.

Bottle. Reddish brown pour with grey-brown head. Aroma is light cherry sweetness, lightly tart, sort of chemical-like though. Sweet juicy cherry flavor, but strange aftertaste and doesn’t taste much like beer. Somewhat sour, and maybe the wood is making it taste like chemicals, I don’t know.

22oz bottle 4/29/09 (BevMo-Torrance)-Pours a ruby red with a small ring for ahead. Aroma of sweetness, cherry, sour, and malt. Taste is of cherries, tartness, and dryness. This medium bodied brew is rather tasty. Not too sweet or too dry. Pretty well balanced.
