Commercial Description:
For many years we’ve celebrated Valentine’s Day at New Belgium Brewing by creating a special small batch beer for our family and friends. These beers tend to be a little funky, fruitful and straight from the heart. This year we decided to share the love. New Belgium Brewing’s Dark Kriek is a limited edition Belgian kriek or cherry beer. Much darker than a traditional kriek with a dash of sour cherry up front, our Dark Kriek is actually a blend of two beers. We start with a light, dry, tannic beer aged two years in oak barrels and combine this with a heavier, dark ale and cherries to create one smooth cherry blast of love.

Bottle 1pt. 6fl.oz.
[ Trade by BDR ]. Clear medium red brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, wood - oak, light berry sour, light cherry, like a Rodenbach. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and acidic with a long to average duration, and a dry finish. Body is medium, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090710]

Bottled. Deep ambery reddish colour, with small white head. Aroma was hoppy, wooden a bit alcoholic notes. Slight notes of cherry pips. Flavour is quite much the same in a nice balance.

Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF tasting 09. Amber, lasting beige head. Touch of sour fruit on aorma, sweetish fruit, bit like a Flemish sour. Bit too sweet on the brown sugar.

Bottle from Cody, thanks! Reddish brown color. Vinous aroma with hints of vinegar and cherry, not unlike a matured Rodenbach. Slight sour and vinous flavor with oak, cherry and vanilla. Gives a matured impression. Some fruity sweetness, but relatively dry. Has some complexity. Very well done!

A Mes rate: bottle at the ever brilliant Chris O’s Pre GBBF Extravaganza.
Clean amber with a thin off white head. Fruity nose, slight barrel and maybe a little too much malt. Good flavour. The cherry is very delicate but clearly there. Excellent soft wooden notes. The barrel aging has been done really well if maybe not quite long enough. Overall, it’s very much like a good quality Flemish sour with some delicate cherry.

22oz bottle. Poured a medium reddish/brownish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of woodiness, some funk, cherries, and some berries. Tastes of cherries (semi-sweet start with a nice lighter tart), woodiness, citrus, and the same lighter funkiness. Alcohol content well hidden. Not that bad of a Fruit Beer.
