Commercial Description:
Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

On tap at Papago. Pours a dark shade of brown with a creamy off-white head. Overwrought with bananas and cloves in the nose. Tastes malty, with a watery plum mouthfeel and further notes of banana, baker’s cocoa, and wheat. Not my bag.

Tap at Pap. This is quite something! Aroma is banana and clove-laden as promised, with touches of dark fruit like a quad. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. Flavor is melty, fruity, more banana and almost a caramel quality to the finish, which is quite short. As interesting a wheat beer as I have ever had.

Draught at Bistro. Dark brown with a light beige head. Sweet malty aroma with plenty of banana and cloves. The flavor is on the sweet side, with toasty and caramel malt flavors, banana, and a touch of cola. The body has ample carbonation as is almost thick with malt. Like many, I thought this was a straight-up dunkelweisse (though thinking back, the bartender did say something about it being Belgian) ans was surprised by the robust malt profile. I enjoyed it whilst thinking it was a bit too sweet for style, but ow that I know what they were going for, I have to admit that this is a pretty cool beer. Lips of Faith is definitely two-for-two with me know after this and Eric’s Ale.

A strange intercombining of a dubbel with a wheat brew. Aroma of cinnamon & cloves plus alcohol. Very sweet and malty, like some dubbels. Did not expect such a high ABV (got on tap, hoping for a low alcohol dunkelweiss!). Will try again when in mood for such a mind-number...

Pours brown with a beige head. Smell is chocolate malt and cloves and yeast. Taste is like chocolate, and yeast with spices. Clove flavor is very noticeable in this. Body is medium with too high of carbonation. A bit fizzy and while the ABV didn’t show at all, I can’t say I enjoyed this one at all.

On tap at the Gingerman in Austin, Tx. The look is dark, brown to black in color, nice looking beige creamy head. The smell is almost tart, fruits, clove, wheat, bubble gum, and banana. Everything a dunkelweisse should be. The taste is wheat, malts, banana, clove, yeast, and yummy.

On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours a deep, dark, chestnut brown body with a thin, but dense, dirty white head that dissipates slowly and remains nicely laced. Aroma is loaded with cloves and bananas. More and more chocolatey malts come through as it warms up. Kind of reminds me of one of those frozen chocolate bananas. I like this aroma a lot. The flavor is very similar. Loaded with initial clove-like spices and bananas before finishing wth an increasing chocolate taste. Lots of slightly toasted caramel. Has the typical dunkelweizen taste to it, but bigger and bolder. Big dark wheat taste and subtle, earthy hops. Aftertaste is pretty solid with a good amount of sweetness and mellow chocolate-banana-spice. No bitterness in the linger. Palate is full, soft, and round. Overall, a very nice beer. Really nice body and balance for the style. A great change of pace from New Belgium’s typical biscuit malt beers. Solid stuff.
