Commercial Description:
Deep amber brown with a dense off-white head, Dunkelweiss 30° rediscovers Hefeweiss beers through a Belgian brewer’s lens. Envisioned by our own Matty “Smooth” Gilliland, this beer opens with sweet clove and banana notes that give way to a chocolaty warm finish with a peppery tingle across the palate. “I thought it would be fun to make a German wheat beer; we’ve explored the Belgian wheats pretty thoroughly,” said Gilliland. “Since this is Lips of Faith – and part of what makes that program fun is to make beers that are really unique and different – making a big, strong, dark Weiss beer sounded pretty folly-licious. It’ll still showcase all of the flavors that a Hefeweiss beer would have, but add in the burly body and extra punch. Think of it as a Grand Cru dunkelweiss.”

Tap at Toronado. Now this one is quite spectacular. Pours with a dark color and a medium head. The aromas are classic wheat with banana, cloves and spices. In addition there is a very strong malt backbone. Great Flavors of cloves, bubblegum and banana bread. Not cloying at all but with a bit of alcohol burn that actually makes it more interesting. I really enjoyed this beer.

On-tap at the Falling Rock, $6 per pint. Listed as a Lips of Faith Mattie’s Dunkel Weisse. Nice dark brown color with a good spicy clove smell. It had a delicious flavor, wheat, smoke, clove, even bacon, I said it. 9% and way too easy to drink. This was surprising and awesome. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 02-23-2009 00:10:05

Tap at Brouwers. The aroma is very fruity with hints of banana, clove, sugars, toasted nuts. I guess fruit cake would be a nice explanation. Hazy brown pour with reddish hues and a thin head. The flavor is pretty sweet yeasty, and very fruity. Banana, clove, nuts, dark fruits, brown sugar, caramel, chocolate. Light bitterness rounds it out, but for the most part this one is sweet, malty and fruit. But at 9.6% it was a delight to drink.

Draft imperial pint pours tawny brown with plush beige head. Aroma of clove. Leading flavors of clove and banana bread with tinge of sulfur complexity, followed by hints of wheat and brown sugar. Carbonation seems reserved, especially considering head. Alcohol not even revealed. Body is pillow soft, as is finish.

Draught. Pours dark brown with a large, frothy, light brown head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, straw, nutty), average hops (flowers, herbs, grass), heavy yeast (barnyard, broth, earth) with notes of banana, dates, plum, and nutmeg. Full bodied, sticky texture, lively carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, moderate sweetness and bitterness, light acidity.

on tap at papago... pours a dark nutty brown with orange hues. it is capped by a soft beige tinted off white head. the aroma is almost exactly like banana nut bread... toasted nuts candied in brown sugar, cooked over ripe bananas, doughy malt and clove with some raisins. it tastes like yeasty banana bread as well!... although a bit too sweet for beer. it’s got a lot of brown sugar-y maltiness along with hints of molasses, yeast, nearly rotten bananas, milk chocolate, toasted cashews and pecans with a warmly spiced finish which reveals some floral hoppiness. the aftertaste is just like a banana rolled in brown sugar! the alcohol is not noticed until the night goes on. the body is a little thicker than medium from the sugars with a slight chalkiness/starchiness to the mouth feel . i’d like this a whole lot more if it weren’t so sweet. still...8/4/7/4/15/3.8

Draft. Rich dark mahogony beer with a dark-cream colored head. Big malty, light spice/clove aroma. Very rich caramel flavor with some dried fruit and a bit of spice. Medium-plus bodied. Rich caramel lingers with some nice malty sweetness and some dried fruit. Wheat gets a little lost, but this is a great rich caramel beer.

On tap at Falling Rock poured a clear reddish brown with a small diminishing amber head. Aromas of carmel, banana, bubblegum and clove. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of burnt carmel, clove and light bubblegum with a smooth spiced finish.
