Commercial Description:
From the brewer, Jonny Wright: It is a Trippel Grand Cru, called Jonny's Voodoo Ale. I used a Belgian Trappist yeast strain and also Yerba Mate in the beer. I used Pale Malt and Wheat Malt in the brew. On the hop side, I used Target, Cascade and Amarillo. Color is golden and the alcohol content is 8.5% by volume.

Draught. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of banana/gum, clove, and candy sugar. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Relatively pleasant strong golden Belgian brew, but too sweet for my liking.

On tap @ Falling Rock poured a clear gold with a small lasting creamy white head. Aromas of banana, spice, fruittiness, light carmel and a hint of honey. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, spice and light fruittiness with a smooth lingering spicy bittersweet finish.

8th Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines. Pours clear light yellow with a huge, rocky, white head, lasting with excellent lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (grain, hay, straw), light hops (grass), average yeast (dough, earth) with notes of banana. Medium bodied, oily texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

2008 Boulder Strong Ale Fest: Light golden. Lively carbonation. Sticky malts (honey-like). Yerba mate was slightly noticeable ... earthy, faintly smoky, tea-like. In some ways it was mead-like, and in other ways it was white wine-like. Herbal aromas were pleasant. Yeast seemed to contribute well. Not too shabby.

Growler, courtesy DragonStout. Pours a clear, light golden body. Skinny lines of lacing mark the glass. Aromas of bubblegum, banana, clove, and Materva (a Cuban Yerba Mate soda) were very fresh and inviting, yet somewhat strange. Flavors followed down that same path, with the Yerba Mate becoming more and more obvious. The bubblegum is slightly minty, and it gets annoying pretty quickly. A mild hoppiness emerges on the finish. Medium bodied, this one feels slightly prickly in the mouth. I concur with PhillyBeer2112’s observation on the empty glass.....it did indeed smell just like gingersnap cookies. Strange.

from a growler, thanks to BlackForestCO for this. pours clear golden with white creamy head. nose is very fruity, bubblegummy, orange, peach, with a nice yeasty spice. flavor is slightly PNW hoppy, mostly bubblegum, peach, orange, grassy, all the fruitiness is balanced by yeasty spice. a bit chewy. clean and refreshing. this really isn’t that much different from their regular trippel. pretty solid, but i was hoping the difference would be there as in the difference between their abbey vs abbey grand cru. it was not.

Very tasty. Wheaty character with some spice. Very strong and definitely Belgian in character. A little yeast on the finish.
