Commercial Description:
Deep burnished gold with a slight haze, Le Fleur Misseur opens with pineapple, clove and honey notes. Dry-hopping produces a flower leaf aroma supported by tones of fresh bread and honey. Le Fleur finishes dry and slightly herbal. Produced for New Belgium coworkers to celebrate our 15th anniversary, Le Fleur has roots in the earliest days of our history. In 1988 founder Jeff Lebesch sat weary on the side of a Belgian road when a young lad passing by picked a delicate yellow flower and offered it to Jeff. “Le Fleur, Misseur?” Jeff misspelled the boy’s comment in his journal as he accepted the offering. A treasured memory, a beer to treasure. Brewed in honor of the New Belgium’s 15th anniversary. It is a tip of the hat to Orval.

Draft @ Falling Rock Tap House. Pours a bright, medium honey-golden color; effervescent; creamy white head with good retention and glistening, fine-bubbled lacing; great looking pour. Very nicely dry aroma with toasty brettiness, crackers, a bit of honey; slightly reserved, but good. Medium mouthfeel: effervescent bubbles; gorgeous, crisp mouthfeel and a solidly dry core; excellent drinkability; honey, yellow fruits, and the slightest amount of funk and brett at the perimeter; a very good Belgian ale. I could drink a ton of this. Medium finish: toasty crackers, light breadiness, and dry minerals.

On tap at 515 in Santa Cruz. Poured into a goblet. Light cloudy gold color with a fluffy white head. Aroma is bright fleshy fruit with some yeastiness and a very subtle funk. Flavor is a bit floral, some phenols, yeasty bread, medium tart, pear and apricot fruitiness, a bit of brett in the finish. Dry and reasonably complex, but no Orval here. Nice mouthfeel with a little too much carbonation.

Tap @ Papago. Stale sour aroma rather bland. Hazy yellow body with white head. Flavor was some spicey acidic sour tart watered down. Not very tasty on the palate leaving a spicey tin aftertaste.

Draft... RBSG ‘08... Clear, light yellow ale with small, creamy, white head. Excellent retention. Acidic, grainy nose. Medium to full-bodied and syrupy with lively carbonation. Well-balanced, mildly tart flavor with a nice hop bite. Lengthy, crisp, mildly sweet finish.

Draft at Brouwers.

If this mess is a nod to Orval I hope I never do anything to merit a nod from New Belgium. Yeah, it’s a Belgian-style ale, and yeah, with a bit of imagination you can taste some brett in there. But Orval? Get the hell out of here. This sweet, grainy, basically a half-arsed attempt at a light Belgian from an American microbrewery. No aroma save for a bit of apple juice. Not undrinkable by any means -- just not anything special in the least.

Draft@ Brouwer’s. Light amber with a tight head. Mild nose is a little bit of cheese with bready malts and spice. Medium body. Lightly sweet grainy pale malt flavor with some spicy yeast. The bar keep called this a sour ale; not even close.
