New Belgium brought this to the Hops in Humboldt Micro-Brew Festival on August 26th in Fortuna, CA. Poured dark red/brown with a large bubbled off-white head that left big chucks of lacing in the glass. Nose of chocolate and fruits, with overtones of nuts and grains. Mouthfeel was lively yet smooth at the same time. Taste was mostly chocolate and coffee, with a little burnt touch to the malt. Finish was slightly bitter with a sense of hops. With a brew this complex you really need more than 4 oz to figure everything out, but I found this enjoyable.

Draft. Blackish beer with a nice off-white head. Sweet malt and yeast aroma. Yeasty, chocolate and sweet malt flavor with very light fruitiness and some oatmeal that comes on stronger as you drink more. Lingering chocolate and yeast. medium bodied.

On tap at NBB brewhouse 2 while talking with Peter Bouckaert. Roasty aroma with belgian yeasty notes (fruity/bready). Body is less think than other stouts, but hey, look at the name of the beer. Unique beer, not a "style" (Hah) I’ve ever seen brewed before. Kind of a nice combo between 1554 and Abbey, yet stouter. Nice mouthfeel, a unique experience.

On tap @ Falling Rock poured a clear brown with a lasting amber head. Aromas of chocolate, carmel and hints of coffee and vanilla. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of milk chocolate, carmel and vanilla with a smooth lightly sweet finish.

Segfault hooked me up with some of this fascinating concoction. Interesting roast and yeast aroma. Some earthy spiciness to the nose. Flavor is pretty roasty up front but as you drink more, the belgian vibes start coming through. Feels warming, yeasy and some more of those spices come through. This is an interesting beer. Not really anything that fits in a specific style. I’d like to see the body beefed up a bit more (felt too thin) and get some more caramel in there. That could make this shine.

Draft. Deep caramel color with an ivory colored wisp on the surface. Very pale for a stout. Vivid aromas of bananas, chocolate and popcorn. Fruity and malty with notes of cherries, chocolate and prunes. More popcorn notes come though in the flavor as well. Somewhat sour with a banana flavor. Could it be this was brewed with a Belgian yeast? (In my defense; this beer wasn’t called "Belgian Stout" when I rated it.) A very "busy" flavor but not too weird to be enjoyable. And, as with most all NB beers, brewed flawlessly.

Draft at the brewery. .. Roasty, fruity. .. Dark Brown, reddish hints. .. Fruity, sweet, boysenberry, some roast character. . . Med body, creamy. .. . Labelled ’pat’s stout - it’s not, it’s a great medium belgian brown beer with lots of interest.
