I like my wheat beers, probably more so than most, but this was a disappointment. Some citrus and spice in the aroma, but it’s like a toned down version of what a good wheat beer should be. Same goes for the flavor profile: some zesty lemon and spice, but to say that it is not a complex beer is an understatement. nickspies (76), Omaha, Nebraska, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 24, 2007 Whitish color of hardly even yellow, more like a lemon jice tint than anything. Clearish/dusty body with a small crusty topping of starch white foam sits breifly but leaves some tiny partings of lacey bits and an always present little collar ring.
Nice aroma of snappy fresh wheat malt and some Belgian candyishness spiced in adding lemon soggy orange drops.
Taste is crisp, quick, clean, and snappy of wheat tones; however, it’s not all that lengthy or complex. Brightly carbonated with just the right kinda bite within the flavors of the wheat. Sliced lemon wedges and some corriander-like spices flip around the edges of the bite. Kinda pale overall in flavor but the bite seems right and makes for a good little drinker.
Body is decent, but could be broader in length and perhaps somekind of finishing attributes could’ve helped nudge the interest and character up some as well. Overall, quite crisp, clean, and refreshingly quick to the palate and buds.
A solid drinker for sure, but lacks a bit of depth and thicker color for a Wit. Gusler (2655), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 24, 2007 Upon the pour the beer appears a foggy pale gold, the head large and a creamy white, settles slowly, leaving a fine sheet of lace. Nose has a bit of hops, lots of coriander, citrus like in its crispness, sweet, with a bit of earthiness. Start has a pleasant malt profile, sweet with a spike of hop bitterness at the back, top is light to medium in feel. Finish has a prickly acidity, the hops delectable, very dry aftertaste, and a nice clean refreshing beer. kp (8500), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Oct 18, 2007 The Mothership has landed, bringing messages of hope, peace and the tidings of a sultry summer. Drinkers bedraggled in sweat and fatigued from quenching but insipid lagers have been given hope in the form of New Belgium’s Mothership Wit. You see, New Belgium, as a confluence of drinking audiences, is the perfect forum to introduce a new style to the public at large. It’s like having ’A Friend in the Biz’ that understands your predicament. You want fancy beer, but you don’t want to dive headlong into a heady haze of elaborate styles, prolixic reviews and elitist drinkers. New Belgium is there for you, whipping up a batch of craft beer - NO MSG, NO DDT AND NO PEDANTIC FUSS. It’s like going to a party with all the cool kids and having a paternal guide to teach you the ins and outs of the daunting social scene. Someone like Will Smith in "Bagger Vance". However, because the Mothership Wit is an introductory beer of its style, it suffers from a didactic simplicity which, for inveterate drinkers, will be dissapointing. The lazy, dried corn husk yellow paces errantly in the glass as it wafts up a crisp and clear aroma of wheat, lemon and a bit if spicy clove. It’s a cool vapor, refreshing, and almost like a mister in a shaded cabana. Immediately it plummets the temperature of the olfactory, sending all its coursing blood back through the body with a slightly chilling tinge. The palate is brisk and effervescent, filling every niche and corner of the mouth with pinprick bubbles. As it does so, a gentle flavor of wheat, butter and lemon flows elegantly around the tongue like a snaking unguent, coating every taste bud with a generous dose of the Wit. A timid glimmer of spice appears in paroxysmic bursts, flitting in and out, but it is fleeting and when gone, missed. The flavor has all the basic necessities to a decent Wit but, in its completeness, still lacks something special. It is utilitarian, given to production and satisfaction, but barring flair and personality. It is a core Wit and, to any uninitiated drinker, will be a fantastic pull of special, savory, grainy flavor. But warning goes to the discerning savant who, likely having had a spectrum of excellent Wit’s, or even having simply had Hoegaarden, will get nothing more than a tasty drop of beer for a hot summer’s day.
