The aroma was okay - citris, floral, tangy. Flavorwise, I can’t explain why, but it reminded me of Phad Thai. But it also tasted of citris, yeast, and left a soapy feeling in the mouth. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 8, 2006 Foam atop a blonde body. Wonderful yeasty nose with a spiciness. Overall, closer to a trippel, not complex or at all saison-like, but a tasty belgian drinking experience. blueduk (118), Eugene, Oregon, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 8, 2006 Pours clear, deep golden with a white fizzy head. Initial spicy aroma features cloves and a zing of citrus. The most notable feature of the beer is a prominent leather and horseblanket yeast aroma, but I’m not terribly fond of the way the hop spicing supports it.
The beer is light and clean on the palate, making it very quaffable. The malt aspects were also subdued, although eventually some caramel notes along with some candi sweetness became apparent. The beer finished crisp and clean.
It’d make a good session beer if the ABV were lower, and it’s tasty in and of itself (it’s worth trying just for the yeast), but I’m not going to mention it with good examples of the style. GreatLibations (1447), Last Supper, Arizona, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 6, 2006 Pours a golden copper w/ full semi creamy froth. Aroma of malted rock candi. Medium nectar w/ mellow residual effers. Flavor are true belgian w/ balanced malt and hops. Bitter candy, slight banana, ginger spice, brandy, w/ bitter peach pit. finish is dry malt and bitter candy. Not bad. Better as it warms. Leaves a brandied alcohol feeling on the palate. mreusch (743), Olathe, Kansas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Oct 5, 2006 Lighter color than expected, excellent aroma and flavor. Overall a good spicy fall beer. High quality as expected from NB. ilikestuff (222), Fort Worth, Texas, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 4, 2006 Not a bad brew at all, but not what I was expecting from the normally smooth New Belgium brews. Had a strong bit at first with a high amount of carbonation. Flavor becomes slightly acidic with an odd spicy flavor. Not a bad brew, but other NB’s are better. swanmann (309), Norman, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 3, 2006 Bottle poured a beautiful, rich amber, with a thin bright white head that vanished immediately. Sort of a buttery yeast aroma, with slightly floral nose. Nice balanced palate with a lightly spicey, caramel forefront and dry finish. The fruity notes hang right in there with the hops. Delicious approachable beer.
