Lothore (276), California, USA May 2, 2009 A- Pours a translucent reddish brown with a 1.5 finger frothy head after a vigorous pour that dissipates quickly.
S- Smells is candy sweet, cherries, rich malty backbone.
T- Taste is earthy, hints of cherry, a tad sour, maybe hints of toffee.
M- Fairly thick and maybe a bit too carbonated for my taste.
D- Well crafted but I can barely drink 1 glass. Way too fruit forward for me. I like fruit beers a little more subtle than this.
MrPickles (108), Wisconsin, USA Apr 28, 2009 Updated: Jul 27, 2009Never had anything like this before. I was recommend to try yet another great New Glarus brew by a fellow Beer Geek. Poured from the bottle, (champagne sized bottle) a red-brown color, high carbonation, but not too much. The aroma was like cherry liquor, the taste of cherries was prominent, for me I got the sweetness not the sour or tartness that is often associated with cherry brews. It’s tough to describe in beer terms because it’s not what I think of as a beer, but it is not like a wine either. The 1-year aging is probably a major contributor to the taste. A must try for all beer fanatics! TampaBrew (726), Tampa, Florida, USA Apr 26, 2009 Pours a crayon red with a small white head. Huge fruit nose. Tart Cherry, fizzy, slight spice flavor. Dries out nicely and leaves a perfect sweet aftertaste. Clap clap clap. Tweety (336), Vancouver, Washington, USA Apr 26, 2009 Tried a sample from somebody’s bottle at ’09 DLD. I was really excited to try this one, since I love the raspberry tart, but I found myself a little disappointed. The taste was thin and the finish was weak, a real letdown. boFNjackson (1233), Portland, Oregon, USA Apr 25, 2009 Bottle... Poured reddish-ruby with a bubbly head. Sweet fruit flavors that weren’t overdone and unbalanced. Crisp and refreshing. A little tart and bold at the same time. changeup45 (782), Orlando, Florida, USA Apr 17, 2009 Bottle courtesy of pfoxyjohn. I’ve been wanting to try this and it didn’t let down. Pours a murky reddish color with a sudsy head that is short lived and settles to patches. The aroma is not at all in your face with cherries as I might have expected, very nice, cherries, candi sugar, malt, a real nice scent that seems to pick up steam the more I smell it. Flavor is tart at first then a silky smooth cherry taste, but not a one dimensional cherry beer and at times I thought I was picking up some apple or pear as well. Malt content is definitely there to give it a nice creamy backing that compliments the tart flavor very well. The finish is just slightly cherry tart but subtle. Velvety and soft from start to finish, authentic flavors, or so it seemed to me, seemingly nothing artificial about this. Obviously very well crafted. Not at all hard to enjoy, so easy to drink and tasty. My wife liked this one as well so I shared with her. Thanks pfoxyjohn! Alldaydrinker (557), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Apr 13, 2009 Pours a hazy red color with small off white foamy head. Nose is tart, cherry, spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, very inviting at room temperture.. Initial taste is overall vinous, tart cherries, nutmeg, cinnamon, balancing by a sweet fruits. Everything about this beer is balanced, the rhine tartness follows through the beer pefectly and not overly done. The cherry flavor is extravagant. Palate duration is above average and head retention. The beer is extremely drinkable for all palates making this 750ml go down very nicely. Definitely the best fruit beer I have encountered and will remember. Body is light to medium and carbonation matches nicely. Excellent Job New Glarus! FlssmrBrewAlum (1053), Lisle, Illinois, USA Apr 11, 2009 750 ml bottle from Discount Liquors (Milwaukee, WI). Yay for finally trying this. Pours a rusty red, some haze, small white head that dissipates to a film. Aromas aren’t overly sweet, but preach natural slightly sour cherries over all. Light malty sweetness swallowed up by the fruit. Initial is a bit fizzy, a bit tart cherry that is evenly balanced, preaching bitter tartness and sweetness in near perfect harmony. I can see why this would be a very high scoring fruit beer. It is hard to say more about this than cherries in perfect balance, nothing cloying and overbearing, but nothing lacking real natural flavor and complexity. This truly is an amazing beer, albeit different than the usuals. Cheers to a classic!
