Commercial Description:
Expect this beer to pour the deapest black body topped by an opulent head of lip smacking foam. Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel notes brim over the top. Lavish spice aromas of clove and cinnamon are promoted naturally by the yeast we import especially for this most individual of brews.

Pours deep brown with a tan head. Nose is sweet of sweet wheat, chocolate and caramel. The flavor is full and same as the nose. Not too sweet though. Medium to full in the mouthfeel.

Rating #275 for this beer.

5/26/2009: New Glarus Black Wheat is definitely very dark brown, nearly black like the name implies. It has a lasting, foamy, beige colored head and an aroma that reminds me a bit of cheap coffee/mocha. The flavor has a good level of roasted malt, milk chocolate, and even a tinge of smoke/char. The underlying wheat malt, clove, and smooth oatiness are evident. It has a nice, full mouthfeel that is soft on the palate. There is a lot of flavor, subtle spice, and good all-around character packed into this beer. I am impressed with this offering and really like the "black wheat" style. It has a good depth of flavor and really meets/beats my expectations without being overly heavy.

12 fl. oz. bottle from buckybeer. Thanks Mark! Score: 7/4/8/3/15=3.7

8/10/2009: New Glarus Black Wheat... Aroma: Dark chocolate, nutty caramelized wheat. Appearance: Near black in color, opaque; 3-finger pillowy tan-colored head on the pour, frothy residual head and puffy lacing. Flavor: Mocha and a hint of mushy ripe banana; cream of wheat with chocolate syrup, roasty coffee and caramelized finish, char/smoke/burnt bread crust in the finish. Excellent! Palate: Medium-full body, creamy and smooth; filling. Overall: So different and so damn good!

12 fl. oz. bottle (0579 11:12) from buckybeer via trade in March 2009. Thanks again Mark! Score: 7/4/8/4/16=3.9

Pours like the commercial description. Smells like the commercial description. I’m lazy so I’ll just say it tastes like it too. It’s damn tasty.

bottles from bockyhorsey... very dark reddish tinted woody brown with an off white head. it smells like slightly smoky wheaty banana bread and roasted corn... dried fruit and spices are in there as well. the flavor is pretty much the same with the addition of some toasted nuts. it finishes dry and leaves an aftertaste of chocolate. medium bodied with a refreshing level of carbonation... reminds me of bridalweisse... when it was good.7/5/7/3/15/3.7

Pours a very dark, chocolate-mahogany color with a thick head. Clove and spicy/fruity aroma. Flavor is a very complex mix of fruits, spices, and some coffee/chocolate. Fairly heavy for a wheat beer, this would probably go well with food. I picture drinking it near a fire in fall/winter, rather than as a thirst quencher in the summer.

BOTTLE: Hmm...a dunkelweizen, huh? Pretty pronounced Belgian character here. Banana, clove, wheat/yeast, yeah - there’s al little roast in there, and some carbonation. Pretty good!

Personal preference here.. I don’t like weizens that much. I love the roasted barley and the chocolate, but then the nasty clove banana hits. Fantastic nose. Sort of dry. I wish I liked weizens, because I can tell this is obviously a beer of the highest quality. Just not to taste.

Thanks to Ughsmash for this trade. Almost as good a dark wheat beer as Aventinus - and that’s no faint praise!
