Commercial Description:
Expect this beer to pour the deapest black body topped by an opulent head of lip smacking foam. Roasted chocolate and toasted caramel notes brim over the top. Lavish spice aromas of clove and cinnamon are promoted naturally by the yeast we import especially for this most individual of brews.

There are certain beers that just seem to define their styles. Now some of this is in the eye of the beholder - I would argue that Pilsner Urquell defines what a pilsner should be; that Guinness defines dry stouts, and there are those on this site who would argue those points. I don’t think anyone would argue that the Dunkelweizen style is defined by Schneider Weisse. And to me, this beer tasted just like Schneiderweisse, and I am a man who enjoys his Scheider Weisse. It poured a black body that allowed some light to pass when I held it up to the sunlight. Head was minimal. Aroma was very reminiscent of Schneider Weisse; spiciness with underlying maltiness. Flavor was distinctly more yeasty - there was some resemblence to Schneider Weisse, but more Belgian golden ale yeastiness than Scheider Weisse had, and quite tasty nonetheless. Mouthfeel was solid. I am not New Glarus’s biggest fan, and they have certainly produced some beers I thought were over-rated and others I thought just downright lousy (I am looking at you, Yokel), but this one is exceptional. I had this on-tap at the Horse & Plow in Kohler, WI.

Very interesting. Has the faint clover and coriander notes to it with a good helping of the roasted malt, specifically the chocolate and caramel. I am even tasting a bit of the rauchbier type smokey notes at the end... Another beer that proves New Glarus doesn’t disappoint.

Bottle - This definitely looks like a beer I want to drink. It’s deep black with a big, frothy khaki head. Aroma is of banana, spicy clove, cinnamon , and chocolate. Taste in a word is smooth. Banana bread, smooth malt, faint cinnamon, wheat (duh). Medium bodied with some distracting carbonation, but otherwise a wonderful beer. Thanks New Glarus -- you rock.

This is a really interesting interpretation of the style. I hope that this is more than a seasonal. I like the richness that yields to banana and clove.

Bottle thanks to CMUBEERMAN! Pours opaque, brown black, tan-ish head. Aroma is smoke, honey wheat, molasses. Flavor is the same with emphasis and smoked (ham & pineapple) and very refreshing. This is probably the best dunkelweizen that I’ve had, but I am very partial to smoky beers. The yeastiness is tolerable here and not as in your face as some weizens or dunkelweizens. Yum!

Pours pitch black with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma is slight smoke and chocolate, clove, banana, yeast, and plenty of spiciness. Taste is roasted malt, some smoke, banana, yeast, and spices. Very creamy mouthfeel. All right.....I may need to drink some more to appreciate the slight differences that make it unique among the Weizens.

Picked up a six pack from Discount Liquors in Waukesha, WI. Pours a semi-hazy brown amber brew with an average beige head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma of banana esters, chocolate, a hint of clove, roasted nuts and a touch of coffee. Taste is smooth, creamy with flavors of burnt malt with chocolate, banana and some mild spice. Finish is semi-sweet along with a nice chocolate and dark wheat malt aftertaste that slowly disappears.
