Aroma, burnt malts, wheat, some spice. Flavor, bready, wheat and roasted malts, some light fruits, and spice. A little on the thin side, but really enjoyable. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA

I was very surprised to see how well they actually did. Beautiful roasted malt and rye aroma that asserts itself upon your palate. Dry and smokey finish that lingers for a few moments that leave you wanting more. One of my favourite beers that New Glarus makes. Too bad it’s now retired, but at least I have a few bottles of this left aging. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 16/20 | Nov 1, 2006 Pours with a fizzy-yet-oily mocha head over an opaque, brown/black body. Mild phenolic notes lead the way to toasty graham crackers and fruity, estery yeasts. The malts that rule this beer produce a bakery of aromas while sweet candy and spice are quick to follow... and I dip my nose twice trying to take everything in! Fluffy and spicy in the mouth with a sharp tingle, I will soon find this palate to quickly and regretably wash away most of the beer’s flavors. The full-but-fleeting flavors are banana, roasted grain and clove oil with hints, hither and yon, of coffee, dark chocolate and (surprisingly) corn husks. Palate be damned, there is nothing that lingers outside of a sour, chocolatey note! After such a grandiose introduction all is gone in a flash. Still, a very interesting beer and worth a try if it can still be found.

Pours dark brown with a nice offwhite head that stays well and laces better. Aromas of cloves, pepper, caramel, and a touch of chocolate. Flavor is chocolate, clove bannana, and some pepperlike spices at the finish. Good medium body but enough carbonation to give it a soft creamy mouthfeel. Some lingering chocolate on the finish. Very nice dunkel here.. I really liked this one.. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA

Thanks go out for giving me this to try. I hope New Glarus brews this again
in the near future; this was my second favorite beer in their lineup and the
only one they no longer produce.
Aroma / Appearance - The nose is a rich mixture of cocoa, malts, oats,
wheat, plums and cherries. It is fruity, smoky and wheaty all at the same
time without any particular combination overwhelming the others. The pour
resulted in a one-finger hazel colored head sitting over a deep brown body.
Flavor / Palate - There was alot going on in such a small bottle. It
opened with malty, chocolately hints that reminded me of slightly overcooked
smores (where the marshmellow and chocolate are singed at the edges). It
then becomes fruity, with the most obvious players being cherries, plums and
raspberries. Next it morphs into a creamy blend of chocolate dipped expresso
beans. Finally, just before finally giving up it tastes like peanut butter
and jelly made with raspberry jam. The finish is dry and smoky, reminding
me of a billiards hall full of hazy cigar smoke. At no point was I disappointed;
in fact this was better than any expectations I had. It is by far the best
dunkelweizen I’ve sampled. I will have to keep searching to see if any others
can compare. Dickinsonbeer (3497), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 8, 2006 Last HWOH. Pours a deep woody brown and a nice frothy off white head. Aroma is lots of banana esters, some clove, light vanilla and a sweet wheat malt hint. Light chocolate flavor, but otherwise pretty dry and acrid flavor- along with light fruit and clovey phenols. Some apple in the taste as it warms as well. Pretty smooth and relatively clean.
