First sip it has a very nutty chocolate taste, followed by some chocolate. Then it led into some kind of brand of chocolate I’ve had before, maybe a reisen’s? It has a great roasted/burnt malt flavor, with subtle sweetness in the aftertaste, and all kinds of chocolate, milk, dark, cocoa, almost a hot chocolate/cappuccino/espresso/coffee taste, complex like everything they do. thedm (3836), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/20 | May 16, 2006 This bottled brew poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized bubbles that left behind a fair lacing and an opaque dark brown colored body with no visible carbonation. The aroma was malty with brown malt and mild dark notes. The mouth feel was horrid and very flat. The flavor was held back due to the mouth feel with only slight dark malty notes noted. Hmmmm way against thee grade in this one. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Apr 20, 2006 12 oz. bottle into tulip glass; shared with cquiroga on a back porch one fine San Bernadino afternoon in the summer of 2005. Dark yellow brown with a sizeable tan head that’s firm and beautiful, but not lasting. Smells like a wheaty dunkel, dark crisp malts mixed with the wheat, and a musty mold yeasty smell underneath all. Flavor hits with instant chocolate malt; a non-fruity acidity that I’ve tasted in many New Glarus beers comes up in the middle as a counterpoint to the fresh grains lending a malty sweetness and providing some "space" in the mouth, and then the beer gets definitely tangy as it proceeds to a lingering finish. Feels watery. With wheat in the title and on the nose, I was expecting a very different flavor, much less chocolate malt; with the flavor I got, I expected more body to support it. As it is, it feels and tastes like a contradiction, which leaves it vaguely unsatisfying (which seems unfair, since it’s actually very tasty and well-made). sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 5, 2006 first dunkelweizen. no head... looks weird having a dark beer in a weizen glass... poured really nicely though, the gradient of color from top to bottom is nice. nifty tiny lines of bubbles lining the bottom oof the glass. has strong aroma of muted banana character. appetizing. wow, almost tastes like a sweet stout, though a very different texture. at the same time i’m reminded of bell’s wheat love. quite sweet and quite carbonated. still, i think i prefer the taste of a hefeweizen. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 1, 2006 Thin but dense head of creamy bubbles. Reduces quickly with light carbonation. Muddy chocolate brown in color. Aroma is initially of composting grass, then gets quite a bit roasty with some smoke and black current. Just a hint of sourness in the aroma. Dry, smokey and chalky. Loads of roasted malts and some coffee bitterness. Dark chocolate with plenty of body. I would almost call this a porter except for the large amount of wheat presence in the body giving it the chalky muddy appearce. Pretty good though. Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 22, 2006 Definitely black and definitely bottle conditioned. There was a pretty thick cake on the bottom of the bottle. This is quite a unique beer. It’s like a porter meets wheat beer. Lots of chocolate in the flavor and aroma. There is also a noticeable banana flavor here too. Sort of dry and pretty light to medium in body. A pleasent surprise and another unique New Glarus DJMonarch (6878), Northwich, Cheshire, England

Dark coloured and slightly rich on the palate. Fruity aroma and flavour. Some bitterness in a crisp finish. ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA

Smells malty, somewhat hoppy, rich, chocolate malty, and some other flavors. Taste is sweet, rich, very easy to drink - found myself almost gulping this one down. Very smooth. A refreshing style that I have not much expierience with, but certainly do not mind drinking.
