Dark brown with ruby tints and a small tan head. Aroma of candy sugar, bubblegum, roasted malt and smoke - damn interesting. Flavour is similarily unique and quite sophisticated. Another one of those beers that is good when sampled, but really demands a full bottle or two to really wrap your head aorund. blankboy (3204), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Pours a murky dark brown with a large light-brown head. The aroma of candy, bubble gum and roasted malt was sickly sweet. The flavour screams "What th’?!" -- it’s a weird one. Sweet malt, roasted chocolate, caramel, cloves and yeast. It’s definitely original, I’ll give it that but I think I’ll have to try it again to decide wether I truly like it or not. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 26, 2005 Attractive dark brown/black appearance. Elegant aroma. Hints of chocolate, roast clove and sticky wheat show off nice malt and yeast character before I even hit the glass. Dark malt character is considerable and stands out, in a good way, some wheatiness late. Yeast charater is nice but unobtrusive, with some attractive late spiciness, while the dark malts really stand out and shine here. A gorgously malty treat. This is a real stunner and hands down the best dunkel weizen I’ve ever had. Thanks Eric for the great treat. HogTownHarry (4003), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Aug 25, 2005 Updated: Aug 29, 2005Bottle (12oz) - Shared with blankboy, GregClow, jerc and tupalev - courtesy of jerc. Poured very dark brown with a light tan quick-scarpering head. Aroma note from blankboy: "Stupid!" For me, the aroma was various hard candies from my youth (for instance candy cigarettes), root beer, hickory smoke and bacon, some light roast malt. Flavour quite mild - at first; candy, then burned malts, then smokey grains as it warmed to harshness. I have no words for the palate other than "unbalanced". Definitely interesting, but I think I failed to appreciate the direction this beer was meant to take me. jerc (3911), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 25, 2005 Dark brown black body, thin khaki head. Sweet estery bubble gum aroma is massive with mild roast malt as an abrupt follow up. Sweet malt flavour with a mild note of bubblegum and esters over a muted roast that lingers. Touch of smokey roast when I look for it. Medium to average palate. Intriguing but a little odd. I really liked it. I think.<P>Many thanks to JPDIPSO for this bottle, and an overall great trade of New Glarus stuff - I finally mailed his return package prior to drinking this :) MullMan (1080), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 18, 2005 big rocky tan head and a blackish brown cludy body that is dark amber at the edges. aroma is roasted wheat malt, bananas blackened in jamaican rum, and bittersweet baking chocolate. maybe a little smoky too? low carbonation at first, slick mouthfeel, and quick strong banana flavor. body goes watery, then the flavor goes to bitter burnt wheat malt and carbonation picks up with a spicy finish and aftertaste. cloves are milder than others of this style, which is well done. thanks Secret Santa! | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2005 I’m surprized to see this listed as a dunkelweizen, because it really seems to be in a field of its own, one of those four grain ales with a style of its own. It pours a deep, dark brown, nearly black but not completely so. The head is a fizzy, bubbly chocolate color that retires into a halo state after a few minutes. It has a strong roasted aroma, malt, burnt chocolate, and some spiciness. It’s lively in the mouth, struggling to suds up as though it was carelessly poured into a glass. (I thought I was gonna dribble and, although aging, I’m not that old!) There’s a roasted grain flavor that approaches harshness until it’s smoothed out by the oats. Dark caramel (is there such a thing?) and bitter chocolate are there, too, along with some clove and pepper spicing. It finishes on a lightly sweet, caramel note with just a bit of stickiness. Good brew!

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 14, 2005 Bottle thanks to my Secret Santa. Pour is a nice dark brown with a generous head that went away in good time. Aroma is very soft, marshmellows, malt, caramel, wood and earth. Flavor has a decent kick to it to combat the heafty malt notes. Really a great beer.
