The aroma transforms into a cream pie body, that is as complex as it is long. Nice and roasty taboot. Somewhat prickly mouthfeel fades and the brew finishes surprisingly smooth, leaving me wanting more. Great! Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 12, 2005 Highly carbonated, dark brown, nearly black, short end that eliminates itself with a quickness.
Cola in aroma, nutty, sweet...interesting...a whiff of chocolate.
In the mouth, smooth, and high on the quaffability factor. Cocoa and nuts high in the flavor, clove and banana, too...slides right over the palate and invites another encounter.
A champion session dunkel, but doesn’t taste like any other, more traditional versions I’ve sampled. Quite unique, and tough to pin down. Who cares about that, this is, as said, a sweet thing and easy to down. I’d prefer this over most other wheat beers. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 11, 2005 Aroma is wheaty and similar to a Belgian, with light spices and coriander. Cocoa, roastiness, slightly sour flavor. Nice beer in general, interesing. DrnkMcDermott (1854), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 11, 2005 Updated: Jul 12, 2005Bottled. #11 of 31 U.S. beers in honor of <a href=http://www.americanbeermonth.com>American Beer Month! Well, I guess black beer is this year’s IPA. But seriously: Coffee and black stout is the first thing I think of. Completely black body and a big Starbucks Americano type taste. Grainy, but with a clean lager finish that wraps up the roasties and puts them on the rods of the next train out of town. In other words, smooth and mellowed for a black beer. Oh, yeah, and then there are notes of a few cherries in the finish. Sorry I could only find this in a Wisconsin cheese castle at $15 a sixer, I would’ve gotten more. notalush (2676), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 9, 2005 Cloudy dark brown with foamy, off-white head - full aroma of chocolate, caramel, clove and wheat - yeasty and slightly tart, balanced well with a mild lactic sweetness, cocoa, a hint of caramel - grainy, but medium-dry finish - one of the better New Glarus beers I’ve had. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 8, 2005 What am I missing here? I thought this beer was pretty bad compared to everyone else, and I am a fan of Dunkelweizens. Poured a murky brown with some visible sediment. A thin ring of tan head remained. Aroma was of roasted malts and chocolate, definitely becoming stronger as it warmed up. I also got the burnt popcorn element as described below, which dominated a lot of the palate. Fluffy mouthfeel from all of the carbonation. Nothing really to this beer, and it was fresh. NG is 0-4 in my book. I am beginning to think it is all the Wisconsinites that prop up all the NG products, although I admit I have not had the Belgian Red yet. Wisconsin blows, but then what do I know, I am just a crazy southerner from Chitown. I am giving NG one more chance, then Im done. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 5, 2005 This beer is pretty well carbonated, as I pour it gently it forms a frothy, three finger thick, light brown head. The beer is quite hazy and is a almost purple, deep brown-amber color. The aroma has notes of bubble gum and clove up front, but then moves to a roasted malt note with notes of burnt grain husk. The mix between the two types of aromatics is quite interesting. The taste is lightly sweet up front with a light spritzy note on the palate from the body and carbonation. There are traditional Weizen notes of clove, bubble gum and a bit of banana. There is a bit of tartness to this beer as well, and it is joined in the finish by a lightly astringent roast character. This is quite the tasty tipple; I really like how the dark malt notes of chocolate, toasted biscuits, caramel, spicy grain, and coffee interplay with the traditional yeast character of a Bavarian Hefeweizen.
