People need to view this in the light. The body’s not black, but a dark mahogany with slight red highlighting and a creamy, yellowish tan head. It’s got a robust aroma of coffee & cream, roasted barley, a splash of chocolate, and a touch of smoke. The flavor is taken over the coffee, sweetened as if with dark brown sugar, and has a modest earthy, nutty bittterness. Not bad at all.

12 oz bottle via trade with someone I cannot recall who, so thank you my friend from a far. Pous black with a puffy thin 2 finger tan head. That poured huge, and fell some. The aroma is rich and pronounced with coffee beans, chocolate, and smoke. There is also some nuttiness in the nose. The taste is slightly lighter than expected but sweet and very coffeey. This is an interesting coffee sweet stout, not as much punch as bell’s java stout, but certainly intriguing.

Nice creamy coffee aroma. Black with a tan head. Creamy and smooth palate. Very creamy coffee flavor, lightly bitter and very nice. Finishes clean and smooth.

4/14/2007 and 5/29/2008: New Glarus Coffee Stout pours an opaque, very dark brown walnut color (near black) with a nice creamy dark beige head that leaves foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. The aroma is a very nice dark chocolate, coffee, and vanilla blend. Roasted malts, coffee, and some nutty qualities meld together to form the robust flavor. There is a welcomed dryness in the finish along with a lingering chicory flavor. The bitterness is just enough to even out the overall flavor and reminds me of the bitterness associated with a cup of nice black coffee or espresso. As the beer warms, more dark and semi-sweet chocolate comes through in the flavor with a bit of coffee and cream. The body of this beer is medium-full and feels soft and smooth on the palate. This is another well crafted and very tasty offering from New Glarus... 12 oz bottle from buckybeer. Thanks Mark! You always send such great Wisconsin beers! I really appreciate it.

12 oz bottle from a trade with drewbeerme. Red brown black color, thin off white head. Aroma of coffee sugar, burnt molasses, fairly abundant and nice. Flavors ended up being too watery though. Coffee molasses, light, bakers chocolate. I feel a little disappointed with this one, that doesn’t happen too much with New Glarus.

12 Oz Bottle. Salty coffee roast and chicory, bark-like aroma. Some nice deep malt sugar cream and roast interaction. Inviting. Deep black-brown pour, with a silky soap of aged ivory. Flavor is in vein with the aroma, finding a mellow roasted intensity and a lot of sweet char, bourbon oak, barbeque and a nip of dark chocolate. Intergrated and smooth. Somewhat evaporative. Palate dissapates quickly. A rush of flavor quickly becomes a salted oak bite, with a long dry coffee grains smack. Nipped with a little chocolate mint brush. Could use some more density and staying power perhaps, but the palate is crisp and drinkable for the style. Northern Brewer really becomes signature in the smack further down the beer. Nice.

I found this beer to be a quite pleasant sweet stout. Most sweet stouts I’ve tried had a bit of a watery mouthfeel, but I found this one most agreeable. This beer poured a not too thick black with good head formation and a frappucino-like smell. Flavor was some roastiness nicely balanced with sweetness. While the beer is slightly sweet, it has a dry finish. Very pleasant mouthfeel.

Wife picked this up for me when she went outta town. Really liked this one. Tasted like a cold cup of java with a Herseys kiss tossed in. Poured a medium brown with a monster but short lived head. Nice creamy mouth feel. Yum.
