| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 27, 2004 Deep, dark red with a thin, light tan head. Big roasted nose full of coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice, bread pudding and ripe plum. Only a moderate body which is nice for the summer, but maybe not as nice in the winter. The flavor has some initial sweetness of caramel, chocolate, maple syrup and a hint of fruitiness followed by a balanced attack of bitterness. The roasted coffee and burnt toast are joined by decent hop character to give strong bitterness. The finish is a little short, but isn’t too disappointing. Another well-crafted beer from New Glarus. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 23, 2004 Bottle from Kevin42. Pour is dark like Coca-Cola, with a very thin ring of bubbles. Nose is slight-a little malty and caramel. First taste notes are roasted malts, coffee, and just a little bit of hops. Mouthfeel is thick and coating. Finish is dirty and a little sour (like coffee sour). A very refreshing beer. This would make for a great dessert beer. The best thing about this sweet stout is that the brewer didn’t go overboard with the sweet. Very well balanced and enjoyable. Drew (2410), Kent, Ohio, USA

Smells like perfectly sweetened coffee. Taste is vinous and smooth; coffee down the center along with cream and sugar; sides of the tongue are lightly roasted and just slightly sour. Finish is long and full flavored. Great stuff! (thanks Louis 1233456green!)

Rerate (replaced on 7/23/07) - Had this one bottled, thanks Jim! Opaque black pour with a thin, foamy tan head, mild chocolate and coffee nose, pronounced soy sauce especially in the finish, mild and bitter. Decent. Kevin (1918), Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 8, 2004 bottle, pours a deep black with an almost brown head, aroma smacks you in the face with the coffee scent. full deep taste very rich. coffee flavor is very strong, but also has a creamy malt to it. this has a wonderful mouth feel. the finish is consistant with the overall coffee theme with a bit of chocolate that makes you go back for more. very nice. iwantalambic (1389), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 6, 2004 12 oz bottle: rusty charcoal with a toffee colored cream. Aroma like just used coffee grinds discarded in the waste basket (I actually like that smell). If this was coffee, it would be overly creamed, but as a stout this palate works alright. Good bit of sweetness, some oatmeal, and fine Baker’s chocolate. Quick, slightly thin finish with an after-taste that is more chocolate than coffee. Would work well as a breakfast beer or an after dinner/late evening treat. . . civforprez (225), Galesburg, Illinois, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 1/5 | 11/20 | Jun 3, 2004 Pours black with no head. Aroma of coffee(costa rican) with a hint of chocolate. flavor is of coffee, oatmeal, and chocalate, but only a little of the non-coffee flavors come through. Thin, very thin. Very drinkable, but definitely not "full-bodied. jewedekind (450), Middleton, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 16, 2004 Very deep garnet-black, brownish head that lingers well. Heavy roasted aroma and flavor that finishes long and complex. Wouldn’t call this a sweet stout. but a very good one.
