Aroma is heavy on coffee with some background malt and lightly burnt aromas. Mouth is fairly light and effervescent. Flavor is coffee and malt up-front with hints of chocolate and ash in the finish. Solid but not overwhelming. Certainly a stout you could drink lots of. hellbilly (1532), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA

pours a orange-reddish tinted walnut brown with an off white head and some spotty lace.
the nose is very vegetal... not dms like the black wheat... more like aging coffee mixed with some ash, chocolate, grain and caramel.
the flavor shares the same vegetal note along with chocolate, coffee, roast and grainy sweetness. it has an ashy finish and some acidity which makes the thin/medium that much easier to drink. 6/3/7/4/14/3.4 Hophead22 (1105), Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 26, 2009 Sample at the brewery. Almost completely dark. Strong coffee notes of course. Lot more coffee flavor as well, good roastiness, not an over the top coffee beer though, very nice and easy to drink. BVery (512), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 8, 2009 12oz bottle. Pours clear dark brown with red tints and small light tan head. Aroma is strong with coffee, chocolate, and some roasted malt and caramel. Flavor is mainly coffee and roasted malts with chocolate and light caramel. Has a nice sweetness that balances out the coffee. Another solid brew from New Glarus. bookman10 (88), Osseo, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 5, 2009 Pours a nice deep, dark brown with a moderate head. The coffee is very noticeable both in the aroma and the flavor. This is a thick, rich, complex beer with some chocolate and other sweet notes in the background. Some fruitiness and malt flavors evident as well. Not a bad stout at all! JoeMcPhee (5010), Jackson Heights, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 4, 2009 A gift from my bosses travels. Deep black beer with a creamy white head. The aroma is rich and loaded with a sweet/soft coffee aroma. Intense but smooth. Lots of cocoa and a bit of herbal character behind the coffee. Rich body with a lovely balance of sweet cocoa and rich coffee. Lingering lightly roasty finish. durhambeer (1219), Durham, USA

Not a whole lotta coffee; much more cocoa to my taste buds. Some taste of sweet concentrated coffee, almost like a mocha shot. Mild molasses and anise notes. Taste really falls flat and thin. Disappointing, but I assume a fresher bottle would be better.
