| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 17, 2009 12oz bottle. Deep red-black color, small but lasting head. Perfect roasty coffee aroma, well done. Lots of smooth chocolate flavor, some mild cocoa and hop bitterness as well. There is some noticeable coffee flavor, but never overwhelming or in your face. Score another one for New Glarus, top notch brew. kosko20 (302), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | May 13, 2009 Pitch black pour with a nice tan head. Aroma is not what I was expecting. Chocolate and dark roast malts front run ahead of the coffee. Flavor is balanced between sweet from chocolate and bitter from coffee and hops. Palate is lovely, creamy, smooth, thick and perfectly carbonated. Solid brew only wishing more coffee. TearsforBeers (173), Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 10, 2009 Bottle. Pours an average dark stout with tan head. Very nice sweet chocolate, coffee, dark roast aroma. The flavor is just the right combination of stout and coffee. This is one of the few non imperial coffee stouts that actually gets the coffee right. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Overall, the best coffee stout I’ve had. coharahawk (87), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 5, 2009 Bottle. I have had this several times, but finally got around to rating it. Pours black with a small, quickly fading tan head. Aroma is loaded with roasty malts, chocolate notes, and coffee (although less than expected). Maybe a tiny bit of smoky character as well. Flavor is sweet and milk chocolate up front followed by lots of nice bitter coffee. Tiny bit of hops on the back end. Has a medium body and goes down very smoothly. Delicious. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 3, 2009 Big coffee aroma with moderate roasted malt and chocolate. Pours a dark brown with barely some red highlights when held to the light. A small tan head that leave a bit of lacing. Definitely lots of roasted coffee and roasted grain. Chocolate is subtle and comes more towards the finish. Hops are present in the finish as well, but are light and blend very well. Coffee and roasted malts linger for a little in the aftertaste. A very smooth and drinkable stout. I could not be happier that New Glarus put this back into their seasonal rotation. noompa (130), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | May 3, 2009 12 oz. bottle (2009) in a shaker. Quite black, albeit not impenetrable w/ a fast dying light brown cushion of a head. Roasted malt and coffee, hardly any hops. A little too thin bodied, which is my gripe with a lot of their ales. Still, uncomplicated and tasty. LtDan (506), LA - Originally from South NJ!, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 2, 2009 Appearance: Pours a jet brown with no head. You can see just a faint amount of frothy swirls gathered at the top.
Aroma: Coffee, roasted malts, and chocolate.
Taste: Spicy hops, Columbian coffee, roasted malt and raw coffee beans.
Mouthfeel: Very fizzy.
Overall: A great level of tasty coffee and roasty goodness in this brew! beerguy101 (3929), Newark, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 22, 2009 Tasted during the Nor Cal Beer Geek Tasting on 3/11/2009. This sweet stout pours a deep black color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is coffee, some more coffee then some chocolate and a touch of vanilla. A medium bodied Sweet stout. The malts are roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. The hops are earthy. Very intense, but very good coffee flavors. As per usual for New Glarus beers, this one is very nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
