Commercial Description:
Copper Kettle Weiss is designed in the traditional style of a dark wheat beer. Rich malt flavors are accentuated through our complicated decoction mash and finally balanced with select Hallertau hops.

All I had to do was pop the cap to reaffirm a belief that noone in this country knows wheat beers like Dan Carey. A small, rocky and creamy off-white head forms after the pour, thin lacing sticking as it very slowly subsides. The body is a cloudy dark orange with earthy rust-brown hues. The aroma is loaded with lightly toasted German malts, cloves, fruity esters, banana creme pie, mild vanilla and cinnamon spice hints, light caramel and very mild alcohol. The flavor is spicy from yeast and rampant clove notes. Banana is highly sweet, as is the overall flavor from start to finish. This is not a detractor, but it is unexpected - a very sweet and robust interpretation of the style is exactly what I’d expect from this inventive brewer. Malt is layered and fresh. Bitterness is very low and acidity is low. Hop bitterness is higher than a typical representation of the style, refreshing, and surmounting the sweetness with a peak of bitterness that leads each taste away from the tongue and cleanses the palate on the way down. The finish is slowly drying and spicy, wheat and banana esters lingering for a medium duration. The mouthfeel is slick, well carbonated, light-medium to medium bodied and slightly prickly. Very good.

Courtesy of boboski. Poured a hazy brownish orange color, very light head gracefully dancing upon the surface. Aroma is a bit doughy, some yeastiness. There is a touch of spiciness, almost a peppercorn note, maybe cardomom. Flavor is robust, with a touch of grain like sweetness. A bit "spritzy", in a good way.

Bottle form bockyhorsey and his wife, two fine folks from Arizona! Pour was hazy orange (lighter than expected) with a head that was carbonated but not looking stellar and robust like many a dunkelweizen true to the style. The disappointment, however, ended there, as the aroma jumped out of the bottle, rich fruity esters, a touch of cloves, and gentle caramel aspects. Flavor followed suit, nice hearty bananas, cloves, light caramel (no roast at all), finishing with a little touch of hops to keep it seemingly crisp. Mouthfeel was a touch light for a dunkel, but certainly within the normal range, very nice. Thanks, Bill and Wendy, a nice treat!

Bottle poured a cloudy copper color with decent off white head. Aroma was yeast with caramel and wheat. Flavor was rich and full of malt with a nice hop balance. Some fruity notes from the yeast start coming out in the end.

Bottle and served in my smaller Ayinger glass: Pour a hazed copper hue with a large fluffy head and left very good lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of banana, lemon, pepper and clove esters along with wheat and pale malts. There is just a hint of herbal hops as found on the nose. Not much dunkel character in appearance nor aroma. The taste pretty much follows suit with lots of fruity tones over layers of wheat and biscuity malts with a spicy finish. Again, this has little dunkel character but is a fine Hefeweizen. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing with a touch of metallic notes on the finish. A fine beer but yet another Hefeweizen placed into the wrong style.

Beautiful coppery orange pour with a thick head. The aroma is of wheat and malt with a peppery undertone. The taste was metallic and a bit harsh. The flavors where covered by an odd taste that I can’t describe. This could be due to riding 10 hours in a car from Minnesota without proper refrigeration (in August). I will have to try again later (next time I am up north) and rerate.

Pours a dark orange color with a white head that does retain, but not as well as other wheat beers. Aroma of clove, spice, orange peel, and cardamom seed. Taste begins almost spicy and cola-like, followed up by wood-y clove flavors. Highly carbonated with a medium body. Drinkability is OK, perhaps this one is just past its prime, I’ll try it again next time around.
