Commercial Description:
100% Wisconsin malt of six different varieties impart the natural toasted color to the bottle conditioned unfiltered ale. Clean hazelnut notes result from these carefully chosen barley malts. Hops from Slovenia, Bavaria and the Pacific Northwest give Fat Squirrel its backbone.

12 oz bottle. Clear copper orange color with thin white head. Aroma is toffee and light brown sugar with an occasional whiff of mustard seed and light sprucy hops. Nutty, malty caramel flavor with some delicate sweetness on the tongue. There is also a nice fruity hop flavor that compliments the malt well.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark copper, lighter than I expected for a brown. Small head, with minimal to no lacing. Not much to the aroma, sweet carmel nutty notes. Rich in flavor, however, not very complex. The first flavor I tasted was maple syrup, with mild hints of hazlenut. Nice balance and a good brown Ale. If you really want to taste a awesome bold hazlenut brown, try Rogue’s Hazlenut Brown Nectar.

One of the best browns I’ve ever had. Creamy mouth-feel with caramel, hazelnut flourishes. Slightly milky finish. Wonderful little beer!

Slight nutty smell. Niether good or bad; better than newcastle but that’s not saying much. I was hoping for something punchier form this brewery, but again the h20 dominates. If you want something from New Glarus for the winter season I suggest getting their Uff-da Bock which is way better and bolder.

NG’s Fat Squirrel is a fantastic hazelnut brown. The pleasant aroma always reminds me of the holiday season, with it’s sweet nutty bread scent. This is not a watery beer, it’s really quite thick and rich. It pours with a beautiful brown hue and a tan head. It may not be the most drinkable due to its propensity to fill you up, but this is the beer I use to introduce people to good beer when they tell me they like Newcastle. Both are brown ales, but they’re not much alike. Fat Squirrel is to Newcastle as a $100 bill is to a $5 bill. Both are money, but a smart man/woman will never choose the $5 over the $100. That’s a clumsy analogy but it’s the best I can do to describe this nectar of the gods. Recommended to anyone who can stand a nutty taste in their beer.

Sampled from tap on 10/11/2006 at a restaurant called ’’Glarner Stube’’ in New Glarus, Wisconsin.

Note: I picked up a bottle of this while I was at the brewery. I hope to sample it soon. I will update my notes with more details at that time... Rating: 7 3 8 3 15 = 3.6.

3/24/2007: New Glarus Fat Squirrel Ale pours a transparent honey color with a large, foamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have is a nice nutty blend of weak coffee and maybe a hint of chocolate from time to time. There is some grassy hop flavor in the finish. This beer has a medium body and is smooth, soft, and easy to drink. New Glarus makes some great beers and their brown ale is no exception. Fat Squirrel is a very nice brown ale that has good flavor (no bite whatsoever) and is well balanced...

12 oz bottle (2636 15:05) purchased on 11/11/2006 at the New Glarus Brewery. Rating: 7 4 8 3 15 = 3.7.

11/07/2008: Hazy brown color with reddish hue and foamy, ivory-colored head. Roasted nutty aroma with caramelized malts. Lingering coffee-ish flavor with a touch of maple syrup, sweet mocha, and caramelized nuttiness. Medium body, and smooth. Very enjoyable and quite sessionable. Excellent as always!

12 fl. oz. bottle from Jason. Thanks! Rating: 7 4 8 3 16 = 3.8.

Decent Nut Brown Ale. Not bad, but nothing that jumps out at me and transcends the style. Medium-light body, light hint of hops to help offset the mild caramel and toasted taste with a clean finish. Finish that presents a bit of a nutty character.

Thanks west coast connection. Sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma of nuts and caramel. The flavor is caramel, slightly sweet, and nuts. Good beer.
