Commercial Description:
100% Wisconsin malt of six different varieties impart the natural toasted color to the bottle conditioned unfiltered ale. Clean hazelnut notes result from these carefully chosen barley malts. Hops from Slovenia, Bavaria and the Pacific Northwest give Fat Squirrel its backbone.

12oz bottle (Thanks to Buckybeer) poured a ruby red color with a small off white head. Aroma of some chocolate, carmel malts and a touch of hops. Taste is well balanced with some nutty notes. Overall a nice clean tasting brown with no flaws.

Bottle: I bought this bottle strait from the Brewery in New Glarus. Medium brown in color with very pale brown head. A little thicker than other dark ales. definate smell of nuts, almond maybe hazelnut. Same in the taste with a nice hopy finish.

Pours and orange-reddish color with a fizzy light tan head that dissapears rather quickly. Nutty, malty aroma with hints of smoke comes through, fairly pleasant all together. The flavor is mild: light caramel malt, hazlenut, and a touch of smoke. Light body which feels a bit watery at times but mostly just complimenting the light mellow flavor. Would be a great beer to enjoy in abundance during the fall and certainly the best brown ale I’ve had yet.

Very very tasty. Pours a med/dark amber with a nice sized head. Wonderful nutty, malty aroma and flavor. Lightly bitter in the finish. Looks like another home run for New Glarus. This has turned into one of my favorite GO TO beers.

I sometimes wonder how I get a winter seasonal in the middle of summer, but nevertheless. Pours a light coppery brown with little head.... the age is starting to worry me, very little carbonation. Then I get my first taste. Not a thing to worry about, this is really good. The flavor has a lot of sweet malts with a clean hazelnut finish. Very refreshing and pleasing to drink. A really well put together brown ale.

I first sampled on tap and thought: Not much hops. Mild, sweet, mellow. Carmel and hazelnut create a blandness. The I finally sampled a single bottle and was stunned at how much stronger the malt, ops, nut flavours were. Still a bit sweet for me but this is better than rogue hazelnut and at least as good as moose drool’s brown nut.

An attractice, orangish brown color with a thin, malted milk ball core-colored head. Warm, chocolatey, cocoa, malty, caramel sweet, toasty, hazelnut aroma. WOW, perfect for a brown ale. Flavor is of an American brown ale. Caramel forms a perfect foundation for the complex aroma components that transition flawlessly into the flavor as well. That caramel foundation is balanced more by a dry, cocoa powder sensation than hop bitterness or acidity. The addition of a beautiful, bright, dark fruit (from the warm ferment) in the flavor only increases its complexity and is why New Glarus beer are some of the best. A great effort at perfecting one of the hardest ale styles to brew correctly.

From a 12 oz. twist cap long neck brown bottle with a blurb on the right side of the label, no bottled/freshness date. Poured a clear reddish copper brown with a foamy off-white head that settled into a thin lacing. Had a nose of green fruits, toasted hazelnuts pieces, caramel and light whiffs of cola. Medium carbonation and a softly crisp, smooth lightish medium bodied mouthfeel. Pleasant tasting, cocoa powder, toasted nuts, a bit of sugary caramel, a very light fruitiness, not much of a hop presence and a salty nuts and sugary caramel finish, overall, for me, I thought it was a bit thin in places. A decent English Brown Ale, but not something I would be a regular buyer of.
