Piney hops lead the charge with a caramel malts and floral notes rounding it out. I found this one to be a rather unique IPA but not a home run. iowaherkeye (1890), Los Angeles, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 18, 2006 Updated: May 27, 2006Update! Just got back from the brewery this weekend and need to rerate with a fresh bottle. 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear amber orange with a small white head. Aroma of hops--Grapefruit and pine with a fair amount of resin--with a nice sweet toffee malt backbone. Moderate bitterness throughout, but about midway through the swallow malty sweetness shows up for a moment, then it’s gone again, which gives way to a slight lingering pine bitterness. Very delicious. (old rating, 7,3,7,3,14)

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Feb 10, 2006 Received by trade from 1FastSti. Pours orange/amber with a highly sticky, creamy head. The head clings to the glass just like it ought to. Tons of bubbles rush to the to. I pleasing blend of hop resign and sweet malt fills each nostril with every whiff. Ahh found that problem. Not nearly as bitter as I’d expected, to a fault. There is some mild hop flavor, and some sweetness, but this maybe one of the blandest IPAs I’ve ever had. Full, sticky mouthfeel is nice. Pretty boarderline between IPA and APA. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t pass it up if offered. This is my 20th IPA rating. MikeMac (185), Wyandotte, Michigan, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 2, 2006 Pours a burnt orange slightly translucent with a almost creamy foamy head that dissappears. Hop citrus aroma with a buttery scent in a backround. Cascade and Kent hops definetly in the aroma and the flavor. a nice balance of citrus and bitternes. Not over powering but pleasant. Nothing huge but would drink one again maybe a future daily drinker beerprincess (51), Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Feb 2, 2006 Nice orange, amber color. Nice head with the lace lasting on the side of the glass. Citrus, floral nose with a crisp palate. The flavor reveals some hops but not what I would expect from a "Hearty Hop". Still tastes great though! frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 31, 2006 My glass fills with gentle effervescence and a ghost of a haze within a pure copper body. A creamy head holds as a small cap. Initial aroma was of opening a jar of Lipton® sweetened iced tea with lemon, replete with dustiness. Very lemony and the hops are fresh, green and abundant. Flavor holds a tart bitterness, above all else, balanced with a malt backbone that adds some sweetness without standing in the way of this beer’s hoppy intent. "Wet" palate with light spice in the finish.
I tallied my numbers to total a "4.1" and felt that this was an excellent, hoppy IPA. I guessed that my hop-headed brethren
<a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=1 and <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=1 RAYBOY01 would give it a 4.3 and 3.9 respectively. These are guys that like their beer as spicy as their food. They laugh in the face of IBU’s and think that Jabañero peppers could stand a bit more heat. I was spot-on for RAYBOY’s total, but I overshot the mark on Cornfield by 0.7. Curious.

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 20, 2006 Golden orange pour with a small diminishing head. No strong aroma, probably the glass again. Only hops. Slightly metallic flavor, much more bitter finish than expected. Good, but not the hops taste I enjoy from Three Floyds. cperry8483 (41), Platteville, Wisconsin, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 9/20 | Jan 9, 2006 Not the sharp, bitter, dry hop flavor that I prefer, but more of the floral, aromatic, slightly sweet hop flavor that most people prefer. Closer to an Alpha King than a Sierra Nevada or Titan, Hop Hearty Ale will appeal to lovers of the former rather than the latter. A very smooth pale ale, but not one that I would buy again.
