| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 25, 2004 Medium amber with a nice yellowish head that stuck around for a bit. Nice hoppy aroma. Toffee was the biggest malt character of both the aroma and the flavor. The hops stuck more to the bitter than to the fruity in the flavor, but it was still a nice IPA. Pleasant to drink. jeffc666 (1892), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 12, 2004 Clear copper bosy, with a dense manilla head that produces excellent lacing. The aroma is a very earthy/citrusy cascade hop burst with some nice malts backing things up. A very pleasing aroma. The flavor is equally as good some sweet caramel, earthy malts, and the ever present hops. Bitterness is medium. Medium body. I quite like this one, glad I have 5 more! | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 6, 2004 Looking at the label, I can’t tell if it’s Hearty Hop or Hop Heary... either way it’s heavy on the hops but not over the top. It pours a really nice amber with a bit of lace left behind by the small-bubbled white head. Wonderful nose--lotsa greapfruit, citrus and even a hint of black pepper, which I chalk up to the East Kent Goldings and I think is a real creative touch. A most lovely creamy mouthfeel with really smooth but spunky carbonation. Flavorwise, it’s not knockin’ me out but it’s plenty good maybe just a hair low on bitterness but with a good citric finish. Another solid brew from New Glarus. IndianaRed (1555), Boise, Idaho, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 6, 2004 Bottle Pours a crystal clear mahogany with a good off white head that leaves thick stubborn lacing. Aroma is of hops of course, pine and malt. Straight forward here. Flavor is interestingly woody. Like a popsicle stick. Hops are there too but fairly mils. Feel is nice and rich, soft carbonation and the trailer is an easy hop bite. Well, maybe just a nibble. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 5, 2004 Color is typical clear, reddish hue, with a firm, if smallish, white head. Nose is sharp, and hot, pine and spruce associations jumping forward. Some citric tones, too, but however you divvy it, it’s all hops, baby! Fresh and bold on the palate, though the finish is a bit too brief, but not unmemorable.
Body’s medium, malt back-up is quite good, very substantive. Very tasty, and very rewarding! Deee-licious! Quite a treat for this card-carrying hophead. heemer77 (4304), Savannah, Missouri, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 2, 2004 Nice dark copper coloring with a medium head. Aroma starts out with some nice oranges, vanilla and a little bit of pepper spice. The taste is slightly dry with orange peels and a little bit of oak. Also has a touch of spice in the finish. While nice and smooth, I liek a little more bite in the hops. A well balanced brew. Another winner from NG. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 1, 2004 Thanks to Drnk_McDermott for this one. This one was a nice surprise. Pours slightly turbid coppery, with a big, creamy, white head. Aroma of hops, citrus, malt, fruit, spice. Tastes hoppy, with a great, sweet malt backbone, and some finishing fruit and citrus. Medium, very smooth palate. This is one of the fruitier IPAs I’ve had. Great complexity and balance. Wondeful beer. FlacoAlto (2473), Tucson, Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 31, 2004 The beer pours a clear, deep copper-amber color that sits beneath a creamy tan head. As I pour this beer, I get suprisingly malty aromas that waft to my nose. As I go in for my first deep smell, I get more malty notes of toasted malt, and carmel. I go in for a deep snort, and just confirm that malt aromas dominated the nose on this beer. Perhaps I get a hint of citrus in the nose, but that is it.
The taste has a zingy, hoppiness to it that is slightly herbal and definitely floral in character. The finish is nicely bitter, but is dominated by a dry, austere maltiness that is evocative of lightly toasted biscuits, caramalized sugar, and raw malted barley. I get flavor notes of lemon, grain husk (a certain astringency in the finish), crystal malt, biscuit malt, and a certain elusive grassiness. The hops certainly are dominant in the front of this beer, but there is a really nice complimenting malt component in the finish, which ends up competing with the bitterness to balance this beer out.
I would, perhaps, have enjoyed this beer a bit more if it had not been labled an IPA. It is so malty as to almost throw me for a loop. It is quite hoppy as well, it is just not a conventional IPA (and really who wants that). While there is a pronounced maltiness here, the hops still play a central role.
