Flavors of malt vinegar, sweetness, nuts, and mild hops come out. This beer is odd as hell. I can’t describe it. It is unoffending and interesting. Kevin (1920), Colorado, USA

| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Jul 13, 2004 Dark and cloudy with a medium tan head. Has an earthy aroma, perhaps cedar. Smooth with some malt. Does have much of a finish. Not something I would choose again unless the selection is limited. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jul 7, 2004 Smells of cedar chips, or fresh sawdust. First opened it smelled skunky, but that went away quickly. Poured a dark brown. Creamy and smooth, tasted of a slightly toasted malt. Aftertaste has a quick fizziness, then malt, then nothing. Started good, then went blah arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 1/5 | 9/20 | Jul 3, 2004 Bottle into Trappist glass. I think I might have gotten a bad bottle. I hope the other one isn’t like this. Overall, not good at all. Smelled really skunky in the bottle and even more so in the glass. It looked ok, blackish brown, brown-beige head was fizzy, fully diminishing. The taste was ok, malty, mealy (like uncooked and stale oats), and very soft (barely there). The palate completely turned me off, way too fizzy and watery. I’ll hopefully re-rate it higher at another time. Probiere (992), Iowa, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 1, 2004 Ok, so I enjoyed this but didn’t know what it was. It doesn’t taste at all like the other alt I’ve had (Heavyweight). So...which is the TRUE alt? Or which comes closest? Yet another reason to schedule a trip to Dusseldorf. This was better tasting than the Stickenjab. It was more its own little space and not encroaching on smokey Scottishness. Sweet chocolate, fresh malt, cream, light hops. Cloudy mahoghany color. Taste: nuts and milk chocolate, too much chocolate for a brown. Mouthfeel full, finish of noble hops. Very enjoyable. Thanks to David P, New Glarus supplier extraordinaire at Brewtopia 2004!
