Commercial Description:
Naturally bold, dark and charming this ale is the ultimate drinkable brew. Expect this bier to pour an unfiltered, silken black smoothness that finishes refreshingly clean.

Mmmm, chocolate... I like the fact that New Glarus makes beer without worrying about the a style per say, which is why I’ll rate this as a beer. Appearance is a cloudy dark amber/brown wit a nice whitish head, but not the black the label hinted at. The aroma is chocolatey and nutty malt, not much hops, and some yeast in the finish. The flavor is full of malt sweetness, with the rich chocolate malt shining through. The beer is indeed very smooth and highly drinkable, another great new glarus beer.

Dark caramel, leafy edges, light dusty hops. Stale palate, earthy and dull caramel, bubblegum and void. Flat palate, very sweet. Poor example.

Pours dark opaque brown with scant head. Nice lacing. Aroma very muted dark grain/roasted malt. Flavor is very crisp and clean. Nice nutty malt flavor to it. Dry finish. One of the joys of WI, to stop in a hole in the wall bar and have NG in bottles. Can’t beat that.

Dark, clear brown with a quickly diminishing tan head. Malty aroma of caramel, molasses, grape nuts, raisins, cinnamon and a touch of mildly toasted grains. The body is smooth and clean, but seems to be missing a little texture or some dimension keeping it from being truly great. The flavors show the age of this beer, as some slight oxidation starts to become apparent, and mixes in with the layered, slightly dusty malt and almost non-existent hops. Not sour, but certainly not fresh. I would imagine a fresh sample of this would be stellar, but age doesn’t do this beer well.

Metallic, sour caramel and banana fruitiness in the nose. Opaque brown body with low, off-white head that recedes to thick ring with some nice lacing. Tired caramel and grainy flavours with a sour undertone. Medium body with low carbonation. Bottle sampled with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, Olivier_MTL and Ratsacouere.

Murky reddish brown body. Sour and metallic aroma of caramel. Metallic and sour flavor of malt and caramel. The body is light.

The Lure:
A vegetable engine runs this chalky, metallic aroma. Something’s amiss, this must be an old model.

The Festivities:
Sweet toasted malt imparts caramel and earthiness, but is clearly affected by stale barbarism. Yeastiness and dryness make obvious the lack of hoppiness.

Transcendence:
Those good people who fall asleep in the sun.
