Commercial Description:
This dark ale is a hearty and satisfying reward for those of us who embrace the frozen tundra. Uncut oatmeal fresh from Chilton, Wisconsin gives this Stout a "sink into it" smoothness that slides you into its depth. Handcrafted English Chocolate malt and Wisconsin Victory malt combine to balance this robust ale. Expect this ale to pour a luxurious rich head over a rich black ruby body. The powerful malt bouquet will greet you as you tip this silky smoothness from your glass. Our Oatmeal Stout is handcrafted in the time-honored traditions. Serve just above room temperature and relax -- road construction season will soon return.

12oz bottle, courtesy of eclectic. Thanks, Kevin! Pours a dark, brown cola color; slightly oily; light tan head with patchy lacing. Plenty of cocoa and sweet milk chocolate in the aroma; dense and generous nose. Medium mouthfeel: nougat and milk chocolate at the core; plenty of warm caramel coming through (mild oxidation); a very pleasant, slightly smoky and spicy stout; a bit of a toasty marhmallow note coming through. Medium, milk chocolate and cocoa in the finish.

Poured from a 12 oz. Sienna edges on a primarily black, medium bodied pour. Roasted malts and thick smoke aroma; rustic rye and chocolate, wild rice. Flavor presents a strange dichotomy of sugar and hop; lactose, pine needles, and earth. Zesty and lightly astringent with a drying plastic tone. Gin character and bitter chocolate, pears; a strange and certainly awkward interplay. Tartness glimmers underneath for a while and eventually assumes dominance, especially owing to the thinness of the palate. Acidity is strong in bitter light roasted beans at the finish. Unexciting and rather odd. Thanks for sharing, Kevin!

Courtesy boboski. Darkest brown with a small tan cap. Roasty malt, bittersweet chocolate, light dose of coffee- not complex at all, but tasty. Medium body, just smoother than balanced. Very drinkable. Good brew.

This is an "ok" stout. There are times (perhaps even at different points in the same bottle) that it is very good, with strong smoky stoutiness that is perfect for a cold night. However, there are other times that this is an overly oatmealed Samuel Smith wannabe. Rated pretty high by me because I’ve had more of the former than the latter.

Bottle from goldtwins. Aroma started out kind of alright, a little milk-stouty, oats, but as it warmed it became quite lame. Good body for the style, but taste is a little blah, lacking in completely or defining flavors, rather just kind of being a mash of various dark malt notes. Not too great.

extremely dark - cant see through it - quickly diminishing head malty and rich with coffee, chocolate and roasted flavors. Pleasant lingering after-taste - overall goo oatmeal stout

6/03/2007: New Glarus Road Slush Stout is nearly black in color (my wife says it’s "cordovan"). The initial head is foamy and brown, but it fades away quickly. The aroma has The velvety, roasty, chocolate cocoa, coffee, creamy mocha flavor gives way to a nice, rich, dark choclate finish. A cappuccino-flavored aftertaste remains and lingers for quite some time. There is also a nice amount of char, smoke, and tobacco in there as well (especially in the finish and aftertaste). The body of this beer is medium to medium-full and it is quite smooth. Some of the creaminess has faded away though. Road Slush Stout is nicely done Oatmeal Stout. I hope New Glarus continues to make this beer in the future. I can’t wait to have another bottle... or two... or more!

12 oz bottle included as a bonus in a trade with Styles (Oct 2006). Thank you Chris!
