Commercial Description:
This dark ale is a hearty and satisfying reward for those of us who embrace the frozen tundra. Uncut oatmeal fresh from Chilton, Wisconsin gives this Stout a "sink into it" smoothness that slides you into its depth. Handcrafted English Chocolate malt and Wisconsin Victory malt combine to balance this robust ale. Expect this ale to pour a luxurious rich head over a rich black ruby body. The powerful malt bouquet will greet you as you tip this silky smoothness from your glass. Our Oatmeal Stout is handcrafted in the time-honored traditions. Serve just above room temperature and relax -- road construction season will soon return.

The body was black with a tan colored head. The aroma had chocolate with coffee and some nice sweet notes. The taste was coffee and dark chocolate. There was also some burnt almonds. I like this one for the style.

Pitch black appearance. A strong coffee and charcoal aroma. A syrupy presence in the flavor but it seemed very dry with some burnt coffee, licorice, and dark chocolate. Not a bad stout.

2006 bottle from StewardofGondor drunk on 5/22/06.
Deep cocoa-crimson tinges set the backdrop for a brownish-tan colored body with medium to light clarity. Head is initially quite large, though fails somewhat rapidly, falling to cover. Charred tan in color.
Sweet cream and molasses in the aroma with pleasant little pinches of vinous roast and light prunes on the end. Quite sweet though from the nose and with a fair amount hefty chocolate-fudge to it, for only 5.6 abv. I suppose that’s quite impressive. Though I think it could be a bit deeper, with more than just the sweet malts and light roast. Though oatmeal stouts are quite subtle at this gravity and allowing it to warm adds back a little lost depth. Some raisins, oddly enough, with a hint of creamy wheat (though it’s oats).
The flavor is sweet, with German chocolate cake dowsing the palate. Some light hints of dry, roasted barley, but mainly a very smooth, creamy, sweet and heartening stout that does not clobber you with alcohol or a heavy texture. I don’t know if they purposely went for the looser carbonation and lower amount in general, but it certainly adds to the drinkability of it. Sweet, with a fair dose of coffee, but maybe a touch simple overall. It’s tough to distinguish yourself in the Midwest with new stouts.

The first thing you notice about this is the sweetness. Dark chocolate, lactose, coffee. Lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Not exceptionally thick but somewhat chewy. Very smooth and creamy. Who says all stouts have to be huge? This is an easy drinking stout that could serve well as a session beer. ANother solid outing by New Glarus.

Pours a very dark opaque black with almost no light getting through and a thin beige head. Aroma is nice roasted balrey-coffee-like, and some chocolate and crystal sweetness, with the distinct lactose sweetness. Flavor is also moderately sweet, chocolate, roasted barley, and a bit of toffee. Creamy and smooth finish. Pretty good for a sweet stout.

12 oz bottle shared by clarkvv. Pours a black color with an off white foamy head. Nose is coffee notes, roasted malt notes and a light dryness. Palate is smooth and creamy with a light dryness. Flavors of coffee and chocolate, some dry roasty notes as well.

beer pours a deep brown tinted black with a tan head that retains ok and leaves good lace. mellow nose balances quiet coffee notes with deep and rich chocolate tones. very smooth. well-rounded flavor is a combination of malty sweetness and almost enough roast to balance. very over-all drinkable beer with a very pleasnt balance.
