Pours flat black with a medium thick and rocky beige head. Sticky patches of lacing. Strong roasty aroma of coffee and malt. Rich and smooth body with a nice flavor profile of roasted malt, chocolate and espresso. The finish is sweet with underlying coffee notes. As with most New Glarus beers this is tasty and well-made. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 20, 2006 Milk chocolate, coffee, and oatmeal...this stout would be good for breakfast. Creamy texture but somewhat thinner than I like. Hops become more prominent in the slightly dry finish. Another sample for which I must thank fellow LoSBD member, El_Borracho. POD (198), USA

I poured this from the bottle to my favorite glass. The head was VERY thin... maybe half an inch max. The aroma was robust with malt. Initial intake was smooth, silky and quite simply delightful. I preferred this over guinness and can’t wait to drink it again. blankboy (3207), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 19, 2006 Bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours black with faint ruby hues and a large diminishing tan head. Nice aroma of sweet and roasted malts, milk chocolate and coffee. Flavour’s even better: roasted malt, chocolate, a hint of coffee, nuts, oatmeal and light hops -- well balanced and delicious! Medium bodied, dry mouthfeel. A real joy to drink, this is a fantastic Stout. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 19, 2006 Thanks to Ohio Dad for this one. The pour is ebony/ruby edged, with 1-finger brown head. The aroma is roasty malty, with a lot of chocoff and molasses hints. The taste is dark oaty malty, with some dark chocolate, molasses, nuts, and finishing hops. The palate is a tad light for my stout desires, but the complexity and balance are outstanding, as usual for this Hall-of-Fame brewer. When I retire, I want to buy a farm within walking distance of the source of these beers. I think i could live just fine off a diet of New Glarus beer and Wisconsin cheddar. hopscotch (5483), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Lots of milk chocolate, coffee and vanilla in the aroma. Perfectly-balanced flavor with big coffee and cocoa. Lightly bitter with burnt notes and mellow molasses. Medium-bodied and oily with lively carbonation. Finishes softly sweet and chocolatey. World class brew! Thanks go out to my lifelong friend Shawn for the brew and excellent conversation. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 12, 2006 Bottle. Thanks Badgerben for hooking me up. Rich, sweet, fruity aroma. Wonderful nose. Pitch black body, large light tan head that mostly diminishes. Not much lace. Tastes like it smells, which of course is wonderful. Rich, well balanced, milky sweet taste. Smooth creaminess, not harsh, but has a backbone. Quite good. A little lower in alcohol; I’m guessing around 6.5%. This is probably what’s holding the ratings down given the Ratebeer big beer bias. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 11, 2006 Bottle from the Tosa Crew and served in my GL snifter: Pours a inky black topped but a nice creamy deep tan head and excellent lace. The aroma has notes of burnt and roasted malt, hints of oats, grassy and herbal hops, milk chocolate, lactic sourness, and some blackberry.
The taste starts with a mild mocha infused malt with a heavy coffee finish. In between I found some smoke, grainy mash, and a dose of well placed finishing bitters. Overall the taste profile is good but lacks the knockout punch, too reserved in the end. The mouth feel is similar, again too laid back, smooth and mellow.
A good beer that could have been something special with just a bit more malty luxury and oat richness.
