BeerBelcher (694), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Apr 12, 2008 This beer didn’t really strike me as a stout - it seemed more akin to a brown ale. It had a lot of caramel taste and some copper color. Not bad, but not much unusual about it.
It poured a copper color with a bit of head. Aroma was of some caramel and earthiness; not a lot of roasty character. Flavor was a bit coppery/metallic with lots of body and a fair amount of caramel-ness and with a finish that was a bit earthy. I didn’t taste any evidence of the presence of oatmeal or pick it up in the mouthfeel, which was unremarkable.
This beer was OK, but nothing too unusual. I’d weekly recommend it.
I bought this as a single bottle at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI.
Glouglouburp (1849), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 6, 2008 In short: A below average highly roasted stout without much else to offer than pure roastiness
How: Bottle 12oz, from KingpinIPA. Thanks a lot Mike! Age unknown but consumed shortly after receiving it.
The look: Black body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention
In long: Noseis very roasted with some old coffee filter and black liquorice candy notes. Taste is ultra-roasted but the body is extra-light with a feeling of emptiness leaving a feeling of feeling my mouth with wood coal and ashes. Flavour of old black coffee and to a much lesser level dark grapes and molasses. Characterless hops. The beer is quite drinkable but so are all highly roasted beers. Roastiness to beers is like money to men, the more you have the less people notice your defaults. GAManiac (174), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 25, 2008 Pours a dark, dark brown with mahogany hints around the edges. The head is thin and dissipates quickly leaving a small swirl around the top with minimal lacing. The smell is big on roasted coffee and chocolate malts with a hint of hops. The taste is bigger on the sweet chocolate malts followed up by a more subtle coffee and oatmeal taste that gives way to fairly dry, slightly hopped finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied for an oatmeal stout with decent carbonation. This a decent stout from New Glarus and extremely drinkable. mdm46410 (502), Griffith, Indiana, USA Jun 23, 2008 Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in an English pint glass. This stout poured a dark cola brown with a thin head of tan foam that quickly settled into a lasting ring. Just a bit of slippery lacing. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted chocolate and caramel, oats, and some mild molasses. The flavor consisted of malted milkballs, oats, and mild chocolate. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and smooth, with moderate carbonation. Maybe just a liittle on the thin side. A pretty good oatmeal stout. MatSciGuy (151), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 22, 2008 [Bottle] shared at the Heritage Inaugural Tasting. Pours a clearish brown with a medium tannish head. Aroma is roasted malt and caramel. Lots of oats on the nose, as well as roasted barley. Finishes with a good amount of bitterness. thejoeshow (61), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA Jun 17, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a deep brown/black color with a mocha head that has excellent lacing and a slightly unimpressive retention. Very in your face nose that is overwhelmed by burnt coffee notes and is backed by a subtle bit of chocolate. Wow...the body comes to mind first. A little thinner than I would have expected, not as "slow" as expected. Flavor is almost like chewing on a burnt coffee bean with some vanilla cream flavor thrown in just for fun. Nice stout that I can just sit and sip on for a while.
