Nice thin lacing head. Effervescent but not fizzy. Yeast/doughy nose, slightest of lemon. Aroma is not as fruity as say a Duvel, but very understated citrus and slight apricot. Satin on the tongue, a real soft treat..and excellent in my book. Softer than a Duvel, and more elegant. I think Carey is headed into the great beyond with this recent shift toward Belgium....and I wanna go too! GaltScat (195), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 7, 2008 Aroma has a hint of banana esters, some clove and other in determinant spices and a tiny touch of minerals. Pours a cloudy, golden-yellow with a tall white head that thins. Interesting flavors, subtle Belgian yeast characterized by bubblegum and spices followed by a bit of bread-like malt mid-palate and some sweet, honey and corn flavors near the finish. I even get a bit of bitterness in the finish. Light in body with a fairly watery texture and a crisp, dry finish. LongShotRX (15), Barronett, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 14, 2007 This is simply a great ale. I bought a sampler pack from New Glarus and this is the one that found a year round home in the fridge. The aroma is light with some hop and yeast, but the flavor blows you away. A perfect beer for almost any time. Except when it gets cold here in Wisconsin. fidelis83 (729), Clinton, Iowa, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 1, 2009 Pours very hazy pale gold with a 2-3 finger chunky, white head. Aroma is crusty white bread, cloves, pepper, banana nut bread batter, wheat, sweet bread spices, citrus and herbal hops. Some floral notes come out as it warms. Flavor is lighter than expected, starting out with wheat, crisp citrus notes, then a little yeasty bread, underripe banana, fruit cocktail, ginger ale, and just a little toast. Finish is lightly spicy, with some bread, citrus and pepper coming through. Palate is light, crisp and dry throughout. With a very active, fizzy carbonation that manages to keep the palate very fresh without feeling too sharp. This is one of the best sessionable belgians that I have had. Fantastic really, not quite Orval level awesomeness but damn close for me, and at a fraction of the cost. MikeHernandez (50), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 19, 2007 Aroma of monastic yeast, clove, other spices. Average sized, creamy, white head that is mostly lasting. Body is hazy, golden amber in hue. Initial flavor is sweet with clove, other spices. Finish is fruity and sweet, average duration. Medium bodied, average carbonation, creamy texture. This is an all around great beer. Make Stone Soup a year round, permanent New Glarus selection, please Dan!! slavnikus (3), Pinckney, Michigan, USA does not count | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 30, 2007 Very good beer. Tastes similar to New Glarus Spotted Cow but with more complex flavors. I am a big fan of Spotted Cow and the Stone Soup is a nice change of pace. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 18, 2007 Clear golden body under a foamy white head. There’s a nice contrast between the honey-sweet ginger and clove aroma to the dry malty flavor finishing with hop bitterness, clove spice, and a pleasant orange rind note. This is a very well put together beer - not too sweet and the spicing elements play well together. I suppose it doesn’t hurt that it’s fresh, too! beastiefan2k (1605), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Apr 8, 2009 Updated: May 12, 2009Bottle from JDIPSO, thank you so much John. The beer pours a thick golden color, cannot see through it (I poured out of John’s package so it never got a chance to settle). The head is large (at times) but fades rather fast leaving a lightly sticky lacing. This is a very interesting beer, and I am surprised I have not tried it earlier. It seems it is made to just display a certain ester aspect of the yeast. Otherwise the beer is rather plain, just a white, thick, bread maltiness. Its all over but in general boring and plain, however it is meant to be that way. This way the ester aspect helps a chance to shine. Its not a crazy esteriness. Its lightly fruity (mango, orange and sugar) yet very dry floral-like. This is found throughout the beer. Its cool, these esters really get to live out loud. In general it could be kind of boring yet estery and Belgian. I like it. 12oz bottle, Bell’s tulip glass.
Had an another bottle and I just love this, I am bumping the rating up a little bit. Its got all of the aspects of a Belgian beer I enjoy yet in an easy drinking, can’t stop the action kind of way. For a Belgian Pale ale this may be the best I need.
