Commercial Description:
Barley Wines are big beers! In fact this is the strongest beer we have ever brewed for our friends here in Wisconsin. This beer is "malt accented" so we searched the world and found the richest, most expensive barley varieties we could find. We bought the best barley available not only here in the United States but in Belgium, Germany and Scotland. You can thank Scottish farmers for growing Golden Promise barley because we used bushels of it in this beer to yield a full and rich flavor. We sourced hops from the United States and Germany but again turned to the UK for our signature hop, "East Kent Golding". This ale is fermented in this bottle and is suitable for laying down. It is so strong that we guess it will continue to improve for years!

Thanks to Philip for another New Gl. beer! Deep amber body equipped with a slight ring of head. Strong sweet candy aroma, mild milk chocolate, with some oranges and marmalade too. Boozey oranges in the mouth, caramel, with strong molasses. Flavours seem to be lacking just a tad. There’s a lot of alcohol here when it warms up a bit. A good BW, just not my favourite. Philip is batting 1000 with all of these beers he’s given me!

Bottle (12oz). Shared with Sammy and DrJay, my bottle via trade with Ughsmash. Poured clear, oily light mahogany with a small diminishing off-white head. Classic barleywine aroma only milder and simple; woody malt, sweetish, light hops and alcohol. Taste follows, moderate bitterness from alcohol and hops in the medium finish, light wood notes and sweet light toasted malt - not very carbonated, a bit astringent, softer and quicker off the tongue than most BWs - an enjoyable drink but not complex - I doubt it would become awesome with aging; hides the 9.8% well.

Malt whiskey appearance with minimal head. Super barleywine and malt aroma. Alcohol impact on tongue. Not complex taste, but decent mouthfeel. Warming alcohol. Honey aftertaste. A good barleywine while young. Thanks HogTown Harry. Another good New Glarus.

This tastes a great deal like a super malt balanced Hop Hearty. It also tastes like what I think Bigfoot would be after a good bit of aging to mellow out the hops. Nevertheless, a pretty darn fine barley wine. Very smooth and balanced. At 10% abv this is well hidden and could get you in to some trouble. I’m a little curious as to why this is rated so low.

Bottle courtesy of beertime: Copper, not much head. Aroma, was good and malty, some sweetness, and a touch of alcohol. Rich malty flavor with a medium body. The slight bitterness kinda threw me off, I need to have a few more beers with the golding hops to really get a feel for them.

Bottle courtesy of Silphium pours copper-coloered w/ virtually no head. Salty, malty flavor of a traditional English BW. Good, but not outstanding.

This was my favorite beer thus far that John sent me. Pours out ruby red in color with a small tan colored head. Taste is sweet - much sweeter than most of the American barley wines that I have come across. Malty, caramel, hops - though not too many - and other flavors. This is certainly a beer to please the masses when it comes to a barley wine. This is a really easy drinkable, not anywhere near as bitter as I am used to drink. It is perhpas a little too sweet to enjoy multiple bottles of this, but for a single bottle at the end of the night, this is a real winner. Great beer. Thanks again John.

12oz - Thanks secret santa (JPDIPSO) - Aroma is strong hops followed by carmel, raisin, date, and fig. Pours transparent orange with no head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma with a strong alcohol finish. Palate is tart and creamy. A tasty American barleywine that could use some age to mellow out the alcohol a bit.
