Commercial Description:
Barley Wines are big beers! In fact this is the strongest beer we have ever brewed for our friends here in Wisconsin. This beer is "malt accented" so we searched the world and found the richest, most expensive barley varieties we could find. We bought the best barley available not only here in the United States but in Belgium, Germany and Scotland. You can thank Scottish farmers for growing Golden Promise barley because we used bushels of it in this beer to yield a full and rich flavor. We sourced hops from the United States and Germany but again turned to the UK for our signature hop, "East Kent Golding". This ale is fermented in this bottle and is suitable for laying down. It is so strong that we guess it will continue to improve for years!

This beer offers an aroma consisting of hops, malt, caramel and has a hint of smoke lingering in the background. It is a copper colored solution with only archipelagos of foam where a head should be, but it has heavy lacing. This thick beer is smooth and produces a taste of caramel, hops, and malt. The aftertaste is a mildly bitter malt taste.

12 oz bottle

Hints of honey, chocolate, orange peels and a subtle hoppiness are present in the nose. Poured amber with a fast fading thin head. First impression was of sweetness, honey and caramel. Initial aftertaste added oranges and toffee. Syrupy with a slight bitterness. Warms the back of the throat a little as it sits - the alcohol becomes more obvious the closer to room temperature it gets. I’ll have to try this again in a year to see if it has improved at all.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small yellow beige head. Nose of caramel malts, alcohol, and piney hops. Taste up front was alcohol and sweet malts, switching to alcohol and some weird fruitiness for a moment, leading to a lingering bitter finish. I wish I could explain that fruit thing. Oh well. Kinda syrupy with mild carbonation. Pretty good barley wine, and assuming it’ll get better with age--like just about all of them. Be damned if I could find a date on the bottle.

Not the traditional looking barleywine but quite effective as it was a reddish hued beer that looked almost like it was syrupy. Taste was sweet at first then packed a decent size wallop. Wouldn’t recommend drinking more than opne at a time.

Couresy of 1FastSTi. An aggresive pour could only produce the slightest fizzy head. Pours a deep ruby color with no sign of carbonation. I’m getting a funny ’tropical punch’ type aroma. Not much on the hop side of the house. Each drink presents a honey sweetness along with a long bitterness that I’m taking a liking to. Maybe a touch on the thin side, but some hop resins stick in my mouth, so that is slightly forgiven. Overall we have a middle of the road barleywine that could easily be selected over most other beers.

Courtesy of a fine RateBeerian who I have quite rudely forgotten. <P> Rich caramel malts dominate the aroma. The color is a lusterous amber that appears to be internally lit to give it a flowing effect. Even has a un-barleywine like thumb thick head that is fairly lasting. Fore flavor is rich with caramel and honey notes. Slight hints of raisins and brown sugar appear as well. Finish is where the alcohol finally comes out in force and leaves a nice warming sensation.

12oz bottle - pours a deep, almost red amber with a small but creamy head which dissapated quickly. Lacing was average. Aroma is loaded with yeast, malt and a hint of caramel. Flavor was slightly bitter at first followed by a hint of sweetness, caramel, malt and dark fruits. The alcohol starts to dominate after the beer warms up a bit. This tastes better when it’s chilled, at least IMO. Mouthfeel is smooth, yet rich and crisp. Aftertaste is short and kind of bitter with a strong hit of alcohol. This is a very nice beer - barley wine. My first New Glarus beer.
