| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 27, 2006 Deep orange-red body, medium/thin light cream head. Caramely aroma with toast and bitter, earthy hops. Candy-like, sugary malt body with caramel and dark fruits (grapes, cherry), sugared cereals. Earthy hops are subdued. The pointed sweetness is paired with a warming alcohol bite in the finish. Drinks like a high-octane Scotch Ale, with a bit of "twigs-n-berries" character in this malt punch. I like sweet beers but this is a bit intense. Thanks Rob (RooftopRogue) for the bottle(s)! Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 20, 2006 Updated: Jun 5, 2007Bottles from MrFacto, Gondor and ughsmash, thanks to all of you. Brilliant copper with reddish tint. Only a ring of film for head. Aroma full of toffee/mollasses up front, fig/prune, with faint raisin, tad too much alcohol towards the back end, detracts a little from aroma. Initial flavor again all toffee/mollasses, dark fruit through the middle. Light oxidized musty hop character in the finish, helps to hide the alcohol a tad. Residuel sugar makes for a sticky mouthfeel. Has really aged well. Original rating was a 3.5. ryan (1778), Beltsville, Maryland, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 12, 2006 Pours amber with reddish tint and a little off-white head. Aroma is caramel, raisins, oak, and vinegar. The flavor is rich toffee and a slight hint of apple cider vinegar. Carbonation is very soft and mouthfeel is oily. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 9, 2006 Updated: Jun 11, 2006Bold red, clear. Sweet, medicinal (in a good way), complex aroma, rich, fruity, seemingly Belgian. Flavor has a smokey edge, alcohol, and something of a gin & tonic (Seagrams gin). Tingling both of carbonation and alcohol. Excellent for the price. Original rating (8-4-7-4-15) // Re-rate, June 2006: very attractive rendering of a barleywine aroma, just a bit hot, caramel, malt; rich orange color; mint tea note, burnt caramel; nice oily body. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 7, 2006 Clear crimson coloration, thick, creamy head, slow to settle, very impressive apprearance. Lovely.
Aroma is sweet and rosey, notes of cherries, berries, grape, apple, melon,...wide open and gorgeous...big malty feel, voluminous, velvety, viscissitudinous... (??)
Delciousness from the start, sweet and smooth, creamy and bold. Fruity factor continues from the nose, blended with blissfull, huge malt. Golden Promis. Little hops,(East Kent Goldings) and creeping alcohol content (once again, New Glarus doesn’t tell us, so we’re left guessing.)
Dynamic flavor, mellow mouthfeel, classy, sophisticated taste, overall a genius beer, leaving me wishing I had a case to last me a year or three, not just the one bottle for tonight.
I like this quite a bit. I’d like to like it more. I’ll have to lovingly indulge these last few ounces in the glass. And hope I get to try another, someday.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 2, 2006 Thanks to richlikebeer for sharing! Strong complex barley wine without the hot alcohol edge found in so many barley wines. Deep copper color with hint of a white head. Aroma of malts, hops, with caramel. Taste was complex-malts, hops, caramel, fruit, sugery, with an mild alcohol finish. MilkmanDan (1940), Eagan, Minnesota, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 1, 2006 Deep copper. Nose full of caramel, richly sweet butterscotch, very sweet. Flavor is extremely sweet, like fermented maple syrup, but not overly thick or cloying. Some caramel as well. Hops limited, is clearly a British-style barleywine. Alcohol well-masked here.
